7296, S-AFC -- Non-turbo, any help?
Posted by Ryan_Hes, Nov-15-01 04:29 PM
Would running an S-AFC with a N/A give me any horses? If so, how many and would it be worth it?

When i had a non-turbo I was ALWAYS WAY RICH...you could use the afc to lean things down a bit to get mininum gas for the go...

Do you have an A/F ratio gauge? If so, what is your ratio at WOT?

Our cars do run rich. Richness can bog the engine down. An engine makes the best power with a 14.7:1 air/fuel ratio. Our cars run richer than that. If you use the S-AFC to tune the engine down you can make a little more power but you MUST have an ACCURATE A/F gauge (voltmeter) and an EGT gauge. If you tune the car too lean you can have detonation which means MAJOR problems!

Here is some REALLY good info on tuning with an EGT and A/F gauge.

Mike and Todd think its worth it, whats the deal kory? 2-6hp for $300 is better than $350 for a header or $500 for an exhaust with the same hp results. Plus you get to monitor your TPS, MAP and o2 sensor and darnit it looks good.

You do NOT get the most power at a 14.7 to 1 air to fuel ratio. The most power is at a ratio of about 12.7 to 1.

And, I think the SAFC is worth it. I went faster with it leaned out a bit the last time I went racing (the 15.58 run) andI still don't even have it tuned correctly yet, I was just guessing as to what values would be good.

No but you'll get great gas mileage before it blows up. 14.7 is ideal for low load and idle only. Without the cooling effect of the additional fuel your engine will burn up or detonate at 14.7 full throttle. 13:1 is acceptable NA with race gas. 12:1 is ideal for a turbo on pump gas and a little leaner (12.5-12.8) on high octane.

I was basically saying 14.7 because that is considered stoich. I wasn't giving a number for precise tuning!

You said its not worth it. I didn't say that. I said it does as much as parts costing more. Do I have a dyno saying it gives 2-6hp. Nope but does todd have timeslips and I called RRE and asked if it helps NA (and does anybody have a dyno for 90% of the stuff we put on). My question to you was why you didn't think it was worth it (stated as "whats the deal")?

Thanks for the fuel ratio's guys, eventually when I go with something like the TEC-III I'll need to pick a fuel ratio.

And I do say the S-AFC is worth it. I can feel some difference and reccommend the purchase, and it does look cool.

wat i meant was that if you are staying na then it's not worth it. dats my advice since he's asking for it. but i do you should get it if you do plan to do some more mods than the basic BPUs i.e. mill head, port/polish, cams, etc. also, i'd like to check out the dyno with the 2-6hp gain. wat year was that eclipse and wat mods did it have?
