72878, Engine won't turn over .... no sound at all.... Posted by gilee_8, Apr-15-04 03:44 AM
Sup guys. I have a little problem here (kinda my g/f's problem) Her Black Automatic Eclipse won't start this morning.
The symtoms are these: -Yesterday nite at around 3AM, it still start and drive fine! just normally drove it back home. (drive like a grand ma) -Today at 8:30AM, it won't start: 1) Gear is put in PARK. 2) Did stepped on brake 3) Turn the Key to "ON" and do hear "HUM...." for about 2 second prolly the fuel pump or something. 4) But when the key turn more and try to start the engine, all I hear is one tick from the engine (tick sound like from relay ticking sound) 5) Then I popped the hood to check the fuse under the hood, all seems fine (no broken one)
I tried for like 15 times, changing to D, R, N, stepping on brakes, and turn on and off. All I hear is HUM... at ON position, then a TICK sound when I try to start the engine.
What's up? I did thought maybe is the relays, but then I heard that TICK sound, but can it be others? please help. THe car contains NO MODIFICATION, all stock!
THanks guys. I have to drive her today.. =( Gil
P.S. The battery is totally fine & NO CEL at all

Your sure the battery is OK? Sounds an awful lot like the battery. IF the charge on the battery is fine, make sure the terminals are clean as well.

You should at least be able to hear the starter trying to turn the motor over. If you dont, IMO thats whats wrong.

yea.. turn the headlights on and see if they're dim. It sounds like the battery is completely dead.

tap the starter with a hammer, dont bash it, tap it. if it starts, its the starter. either way when you get it running take it to autozone, they check that stuff for FREE

Are your battery terminals corroded at all? Are either of the cables coming off the battery corroded? Will a jump get the car going? Pull the battery and take it somewhere to be tested imo. What time does her radio have on it? Are all the presets still there? Have you ever considered a Honda? I hear they never break down...
:P

It's not hte battery. Coz everything is on perfectly. Light is Bright. any ideas?
Can it be the relay that died? Gil

Just because the lights all work bright doesn't mean the battery is good man. Think of it like this: how many amps does it take to power the lights? I'd say 20A (since the parking lights/interior lights fuse is a 20A) and maybe 30A for the headlights etc. The starter needs something like 800A to get the internals of the engine turning. As I can see it, you've got 3 possible things to be replaced: a starter ($100), a battery ($50) a relay ($50). Which is the easiest to replace? Which is the hardest? Which is the most common part to fail? All you have to do is get that battery tested or try jumping it and that would more than likely direct us to something else if it's not the battery.

OK... NP. I will get the car Jump start today. If it doesn't work, should I check the relay first? Where is it? and which one?
IS the 3 bundle relays the one I have to check? the one on the top right corner of the engine bay? but which one is for the starter? Thanks. I will let you guys know if the battery works or not later today! Gil
