72620, Removing Bedplate ????? Posted by eclipseman1999, Apr-10-04 01:48 PM
Is it easier to take the bedplate off of the car with the engine still in it? Esseclipse said that he took his off without pulling the engine and it only took a day.Does anyone know what would take the least amount of time?

i'd most definately pull the motor if i was doing it, that way i knew i could put it all back together, plastigauge it, easy to work with, and besides....it could be pulled in the same amount of time probably and then assembled and dropped back in. thats just what i do though. the bedplate is no joke, i'd just pull it out. what happens if you do all that work just to keep it in, then have a leak from the o-ring there....or forgot some anaerobic sealant or something, or had to much bearing clearance....jsut some stuff to think about but im with ya either way _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

It would be wise to pull the engine. the bedplate weighs 25 lbs and the crank weighs 40 lbs (yes, I have weighed them), do you really wanna be under the car while trying to put things of that weight together. Besides, (this just may have been my engine) but I had trouble removing the bedplate with the motor out of the engine bay. Also, like said ^^^ plastiguage, torque, etc. would seem hella difficult.

Well, using the same mains, it shouldn't require plastigauging. The clearances shouldn't change, if everything is torqued properly. The crank will stay in the block, and the rods on the crank. The timing belt would need to come off, though, as the timing sprocket and oil pump need to come off. I think that, when you get down to it, pullin the motor is going to be the easiest way.

it depends on what your doing i guess....if youre just replacing that red o-ring, then it might make sense to leave it in the car....but if you plan on rebuilding...then deffinitely pull the engine out doug

Pull the engine OUT. believe me, do not try to remove the bedplate while the engine is in the car. You will have to unbolt the tranny also becasue there is a locating dowel on the bedplate that interfaces with the tranny. You also have to anerobic seal the bedplate to the block, remove the oil pump, timing belt, timing belt sprocket, front and passenger side motor mounts, downpipe, etc. etc.
Pull the engine it is much easier.

Whoops... forgot about the dowell pin to the tranny that is on the bedplate. Just pull the motor, man.
