My buddy is having problems with his 98 Jetta. I know this is a mitsu board but I figured this mechanical problem could be related as general knowledge. He says sometimes at the stop light the car will turn off on him. It is a 5-Speed I dont kno if that makes a difference. He also has a CEL but we havent gotten it looked at yet. Any ideas what this problem could be?

A lot of different things could cause that.....check the CEL then go from there

check the alternator and electrical system... i've had this problem with a loose alternator belt... Wasn't charging the battery enough during idle and it would shut off.

Mine does this from time to time, but not only when I stop at a light but occassionally when I take my foot off the gas for any reason. A bottle of injector cleaner generally clears it up.

Just a thought.

Check the code before you do anything. No sense in chasing your tail on some intermittant problem without finding out what the car things is wrong first.

vwvortex has chunks in their SHIT bigger than this entire forum. i'd post there, VW's have a LOT of freaking problems (not common to ours!! )

My car does that once in a while too, but only if I push in the clutch real quick after a hard acceleration and let it drop all the way down to idle. I've been told it is because of the lightened flywheel and the computer can't keep up with the rpms dropping that fast.

Like ^^^ said though, check the CEL.

I had my car at the body shop for a week, when I got it back it would die at every light, then it stopped...dying I mean
