72524, Got the car running..now tuning issues..please read Posted by EclipsedChef, Apr-08-04 05:03 PM
Well i found out what was wrong with the motor today, my Fidanza gears are exactly 1.5 teeth off from the stock cam gears, and i had two wires touching on the coil wiring.
First with the gears, i got everything lined up correctly with the stock cam gears, then i installed the Fidanza's to make sure i was correct on the timing and sure enough they are 1.5 teeth off. So, i know for a fact that my timing is correct.
Second, the wires touching on the coil. I removed the cover i used to hide the butt connectors for the wiring harness to the coil and i discovered that two of the wires were crossed and shorting out. What kind of damage could this do? Short out a plug or wire?
Third, the car idles PERFECTLY and revs throughout the rpm range like a charm. The car only hesitates now in Second through Fifth gears, not first gear and only up to 4k rpms..after that it runs normally. All of my wiring harness is wired/connected to the right sensors. Could this be a vaccum leak?
Im going to try plugs and wires tomorrow because of the coil wiring mishap, but is there anyting else i should be checking. REMINDER: i just replaced my milled head with a stocker. Thanks for your help!

A. fix the wiring (that was obvious, I know, but I think that is causing a good deal of your problems)
B. I'm not sure what you did exactly with the cam gears... did you line everything up with the stock gears, then removed them and put in the fidanza gears? You should just do the job with the fidanza gears, one time.
If there is anything you should do, just put the two sets of gears on top of each other to make sure the marks on the fidanza are exactly the same as on the stock gears. (I know the AEM gears have to be re-marked, I'm not sure about the fidanza) Then just install the fidanza gears; if you do it right and the marks are correct then you'll be fine.
Just leave off the outer timing belt cover, it makes things so much simpler if you have to do this repeatedly!

yeah im going to redo the wiring today, hopefully that will clear some things up. With the cam gears, i put the stockers on and lined it up for correct timing, then replaced the gears with the fidanza's and they lined up way off. Do you think i fried a plug or plug wire?

You can't just swap cam gears without redoing timing.
As long as you got the right Fidanzas the timing marks line up.

I had a coil wire ground out once and blew the coil pack. It actually cracked in half. May want to get you coil tested out too.

well the fidanza i have dont match up, one has different markings for the degree marks than the other, so one is a neon and one is mitsu im sure. Im leaning towards an electrical fault for this problem, if my timing were off it wouldnt run like it does in first gear, then mess up in second through fifth. I couldnt have a better idle, it hasnt run like that in a year.

Stock part for the Neon and Eclipse cam sprockets are the same. so the aftermarket ones should be the same as well. I'm not sure what cam gear you got if they are off.
