72508, Gas smell on my oil? Posted by TXTurboGS, Apr-08-04 01:22 PM
I changed the oil today to Mobil 10-30W. When I did, I could smell some gas on the oil. Now, it could be because I am running somewhat rich, 10:2 on the wideband. ANy ideas? Thanks

10:2, thats rich as all hell
im not *quite sure why the oil smells like gas...it smelled like it when you were draining it? or maybe you drained it into a container that had gas already in it. i cant think of any reasons how gas would get in the oil though :shrug _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

We've had cars come into work that have that smell and ive always been told it has to do with the valves. I guess the gas slips through where it was mixed through the seals.:shrug

Well, if you are running that rich, any small amount of blowby will create a gas contamination in the oil. Is your PCV system hooked up and functional?

Too much crank case pressure can definitely cause this. If you have the pcv, you may consider getting a catch can with filter on top to breath.
10.2:1 is pretty damn rich and I have a feeling you are washing the cylinders with fuel. Does the car smoke at idle? It won't take long before you start trashing your rings and cylinder walls.
Did you just rebuild? If so, you might consider using a thicker synthetic or going back to dino oil for a little longer. Valvoline 30wt is good for breaking in motors.
Curious, what is your oil pressure (if you can monitor it)? Startup, idle and full throttle.

it means your dumping too much fuel into your car, you want your A/F ratio to be 14.7:1 is perfect, try to get as close to that as you can, check your pcv valve as said, to do this start your car and remove the pcv valve from the cover, if you see fumes coming from the top of your valve cover you have blow by, if not, make sure the pcv valve is suctioning on the bottom that goes into the valve cover if it is, put it back in then check the top of it, then check the vaccum hose that goes to it, and lead your way back to find your problem, if your car has trouble starting then your injectors could be spraying gas into your cylinders that end up in your oil since is it isnt getting burned, definatly change your oil
