I'm getting a 3 angle valve job and matching the ports. I have everything removed except the valve guides. I've hit them a few times with plastic rods so as not to damage them, but I don't have any of them out yet. Is it necessary to remove them? If so, how do I go about doing it without tearing them up?

I've yet to see anybody mess up a valve guide, even with bent valves.

Replace the seals and you should be fine. Don't mess with the unless you are sure there's a problem.

I don't think there's a problem w/ them, I just wasn't sure if tanking the head and machining it would require me to remove them. I'm taking from what you said here I should just leave them in and that none of these processes will harm them. Correct?

Don't take them out. Whatever doesn't fuck up the aluminium in the head will have no effect on the valve guides. They have the same coefficient of thermal expansion, so heating the head will not affect them in the least.

Leave the guides alone unless you are planning to upgrade to bronze guides. I have SI bronze valve guides. The machine shop will intall/remove them when they have the head. It is also critical that they are not in too far before the port work is complete. We had to order another set of SI bronze guides because the machine shop installed them too deep (not enough sticking out the top)and the shop porting the head didn't catch it till it was too late. I think I paid roughly $85 for the set of guides if I remember correctly.

We can get the bronze valve guides, price $75 for a full set.

Thanks Michael, but we already ordered another set from SI on someone elses dime. I double checked and I originally paid $80(no tax/no shipping) for the set. If your price is $75 that is a fair deal.
