Sounds like you just invented some new fangled cold air introduction system... oh wait... they already make one. CAI

spend the money imo and just get a cai.

I'm guessing since he's talking about Corbin's setup, that he's turbo...in which case, a CAI won't be you much good (unless you're taking your knowledge from F&F).

And yeah, I *guess* you could do such a thing. I have no personal experience though, so I make no guarantees...

Running dryer hose from the brake scoop to the short ram would be beneficial, but you'd still need something to seal around the filter so that it would be getting the cool air and not the hot air. Hit me up on AIM, I may have some ideas for you.

noob... shut the fuck up. i live in a very wet area, so i dont want a CAI. it would be a pain in the ass to change every time it rained. lets not forget who originated that mod, and lets not forget that bullshit mods would not be posted on the 2gnt main page...

Bleh disregard that...fire at will!

It looks like a great mod..i would just avoid it cause i run my car through a car wash that uses lots of water......maybe a bafle system to avoid water? whatever :)

Okay, sorry. I've seen Corbin's car in person, and assumed you were referring to the box he built around the filter for his turbo. Didn't really read that mod, as the gains by any sort of CAI/Short ram are kinda insignificant to me (only because I plan on going turbo).

I'm not one to really kn0ob bash but fuck, Corbin used to have this Mod BEFORE he was turbo and as bullshit as you think it may be, it is actualy a very good idea, I'd suggest you drink a tall glass of STFU and actually learn from some of the regulars here, like myself. Shit, had I read Corbins site years ago or new more about metal fabrication back then I wouldn't have wasted my money on an AEM CAI, this Mod is very functional but best of all inexpensive and the money saved could have gone into making my car fast with some other Mod

I had this on My Eclipse. It made a little difference for me, but I usually was driving 90+ MPH on the autobahn. I think it also helps keep out nasty hot air when the car is stationary.
I remember nobody cared when I had it done, and they all told me to go get a REAL CAI, but I didn't want to fork out the cash. I used the good ol' dryer hose that ran up to my Ractive heat shield filter, then sealed it off with a hose clamp. I think for the HP difference between a cai and a short ram with this mod will be non-existant to the butt dyno, so who comes out ahead??? The dude who spent stupid cash on the REAL CAI, or the other guy, who used a little imagination to come up with a cheap CAI with an existing short ram.
So, to the Noob, I say STFU and lay off those who want to try something else. Make up a new thread about how you spent too much money on a damn tube running into your bumper that has 3 letters painted on it! :nuts

Shiiiiiiit. :P

The fastest all motor 2GNT in the country will have a fucking dryer hose running from the vents up front up to a Corbin-style airbox. Fuck paying close to $300 or whatever for some AEM Veleveltybillion imo. Go fast. That's the name of the game. If you want a name brand part so you can put a sticker on your door or something, you're in the wrong place buddy.

The only reason I wouldn't do the hose technique is if I get my ram air headlight assy made up nice by the time the shootout rolls around.

Considering a stock 2GNT runs mid 16s, I'll take that bet. Come to Ohio this August and see how fast I run with even the stock airbox and a K&N. }(

That is what my semi working CAI is. I still have the stock airbox on too, I took the weird thing off the bottom and stuck the hose to the hole. I also cut a few holes in the airbox. I need to create something that will go around the box so it will pull in more cool air than hot air. I did notice a small difference. It's the only performance mod I have right now. lol

Being broke sucks.
72267, RE: corbins cold air box

For the most part there is really very little difference in the gains between different CAIs. I have a custom setup made with mandrel bent tubing and I've tried all the different setup (length, location etc.) basically if its longer it makes more noise and you lose more on bottom and and gain more on top end. If its shorter you get a quieter throtle and lose less on bottom and gain a little less on top. As for dryer hose set ups I would think there would be no way that they would work. One problem would be that since the hose would be flapping around atleast a little bit you would have to much turbulance and not enough velocity to get any gain from it. Also I don't think there is really any significant air pressure in the front of our cars since they are designed aerodynamically.

Bottom line. Any cone filter straight pipe(non factory accordian style) set up you buy will work about the same and a hell of alot better than factory.

But who knows I could be wrong.

having gone from the cone on the end of the stock intake tube to the short ram, then short rame with dryer hose from the brake duct to a full CAI...i can honestly say i didn't "feel" any gain over stock until i got the actual CAI...non of the others felt any different power wise than the stock airbox...and as a matter of fact the CAI made the most gain on the butt dyno than any other mod i have done so far(besides turbo)

The best mod I did was sell the car for a car with supercharger from the factory. Diss me for driving a Cooper S, but hey, it's a version of the 420A!! Plus, a CAI and s/c pulley gave me about 18 HP!!

If you really want to...

Put in a short ram.
Build a heat box around it (It doesn't have to be air-tight).
Run a wide tube/pipe from the box to the front of the car.

Posted by ajcfalcon, Apr-07-04 05:24 AM
hey dude, i tried it when i was 16. i had a short ram on my old talon and i did the same thing with that dryer hose stuff from home depot and a bunch of connectors and hardware....i thought it was a great deal cuz it cost me about $10 total. After getting it on, i took it on the highway to see how it felt... not too shabby actually. i pull it in the garage and look at it and the fucking thing tore a 2 1/2 hole in the middle of it. LOL. it was pretty cool to see. i doubled it up with another hose and duct taped the shit out of it and it did it again LOL those were the days...

i went on ebay and bought a cold air intake for $30 shipped and now when it starts to get rainy or snowy i spend 3 min switching them out, but only if its really bad.

hope that helps dude

here is my holy airbox (i also have a K&N air filter) i actually did notice a difference in power, way back when I did this (recently added more holes) cheap and effective (since i plan on going turbo in the future why waste my money?

Word to that sir. That's what I'm considering going back to here one day. I liked it better imo. Right now, it's hanging out on another member's car until he gets his engine broke in and his turbo kit paid for, then we're installing the turbo and my old intake is coming back home to Sarah's car. :thumbsup to the hacked air box mod imo

Sorry...I haven't had a chance to respond until now. I won't specifically respond to anyone's post. I'll just state my thoughts on the subject.

The page in question is http://www.2gnt.com/www/corbin/airbox.html

That page is rather old...Moses helped with the editing.

At the time, there were few intakes on the market. Short rams were expensive and CAI's were rare and very expensive. The airbox is a compromise. It is meant to eliminate the shortcomings of the short ram and add some of the benefits of the CAI. Here is a scientific chart:

Well designed tuned CAI
-
-
-
Plain untuned CAI
-
Short ram with airbox and bumper pick-up
-
-
-
Short ram
-
-
Hacked stock airbox
-
Stock airbox

Some people live in areas where it actually rains and often have to drive through several inches of standing water. That can be a real issue with a low mounted filter (like on most CAI). So, they make CAI's that can be switched to a short ram when necessary. Many of us don't have the ability to predict the weather, so we can switch our CAI to a short ram the night before. Low mounted filters are also subject to damage from road debris. So, a CAI is not the best answer for many people.

The engine compartment can get very hot. This is especially true on cars with aftermarket headers. Those things can just dump heat into the air. A short ram or hacked stock airbox will just suck that up. You'll get some gains from freeing up the intake, but you lose some from sucking up super hot air.

So what is the answer? For many people, it is a short ram with airbox and cool air inlet. The airbox keeps the intake from sucking up the hot engine compartment air and the inlet in the bumper supplies the airbox with reasonably cool air. You will get the benefit of the freer flowing intake with near ambient air temps. The bumper is one of the highest pressure zones on the body of the car. You can expect that air will easily enter the ducting. You can't expect any real ram-air effect...it just won't happen.

You can also use plastic for the airbox. I made my second one from polypropylene and that worked well. You should try your best to seal the airbox against the hood. My second airbox was pretty well contoured and sealed well. I did mount a temperature sensor on the air filter for testing. Temperatures with the airbox were always 10-20F lower than without. Thats not earth shattering, but meaningful nonetheless.

I am a strong believer in cooler intake temperatures. I am also a strong believer in easy, cheap mods that will improve performance even by a little. As long as it helps, that is good enough.

Back in the day, even before people argued about HRC vs. STAR or the effectiveness of an AFX underdrive pulley, the arguments of the hour were which was a better cold air intake: AEM vs. ICEMAN. Considering that was the #1 mod and about the only mod you could get, it was quite an epic discussion. :rolleyes
