7175, Im hearing a screeching noise from my front left tire...
Posted by guest, Nov-14-01 06:33 AM
hey, im new to the 2gnt forums and want to say to all fellow dsm'rs out there. I have a 95 Talon esi with 63,000 miles on it and am having a problem. whenever the car is in drive, there is a screeching/scraping noise comming from under the front of the car by the front left tire. i looked under the car and cant see anything rubbing that would cause the noise. this noise occurs when the car is in drive(any gear) and i either A) just let the car move on its own, or B) if i accelerate or coast. the strange thing is that the second i step on the brakes, no matter how hard or soft, the noise stops. if i hold the brakes very gently, and let the car slow down by itself for several blocks, the noise is never there, but the second i let off of the brakes, it comes back. please let me know if you have any ideas as to what this could be caused by, and if it is something i can fix myself. it really is embarassing driving through town and everyone turns their head not to see my car, but to see what could be making that noise. thanks for all help. ~Andrew

it sounds like the brake caliper is not releasing all the way, you should probably grease up the pins that the caliper slides on (the two bolts that hold it in place) mine was doing the same thing now and that fixed it. good luck

I understand that you state during brake application, the noise stops, but I don't think it'd hurt to take off your wheel and see what's going on in there. Specifically with disc brakes, the pad always has some contact with the rotor, so there might be an obstruction (between the pad and rotor) that won't break loose or in fact is jammed against the pad. It also might be the angle of the brake pad indicator that's causing it to amplify in sound when NOT breaking.

The best way to figure out a problem is to attack it and spend some time looking at it. Get your front wheel up, take off the rim, and do some investigating. You may be able to recreate the sound by merely getting it up on a jack and spinning the front wheel while the car's in neutral.

That's one of the "fun" things about owning a car, you can figure out how to fix problems.

Sounds like the brake pad wear sensor. Pull a tire off, and look at the caliper. There is a small bent piece of metal that comes from the back of the brake pad. When this touches the rotor (brakes are worn down enough) they will squeal mercilessly until you either A) replace the pads or B) Let them wear down til they quit squeeking. Then you can replace the pads AND the rotors. Go buy some new pads. :7

Dude!! I just did my front brakes like a few days ago, and i bet it is your wear sensors making that noise, or the pad retainers too. Just take off the wheel, and check it out, you should at least have 1/8th of an inch of pad left, if not, the replace the pads. Also, many people don't know this, but whenever you replace pads, either get a new rotor, or have the old ones machined(turned). The brake pads and the rotors have to wear in together for best stopping power.

"pad retainers" lovely description of the bolts on the pads. yeah man don't let them go to long, in work i saw a big ass rotor that that had all the surpace stuff torn off it was worn down to the little ripples underneath the main metal stuff

Hey amish, its not the bolts i was talking about. If you have ever done fronts on our cars(at least my 98 RS has em) there are metal (retainers) clips that the pads press into on the caliper. The edge of these clips come VERY close to the rotor, and could be making contact with it. I didn't know our cars had these, but when i was buying the parts they said it was 9 bucks for the front parts kit. I was like "what"?. Yep its kinda wierd, never seen those before, but i have always done brakes on GM's so....

hey, thanks guys for all your help. i checked it out and found that it was my wear sensor and i have thus replaced all 4 brake pads and had my rotors redone by my schools auto shop. there is no longer a noise, and the brakes work well.
7183, Congrats! (n/m)
