Checked to see if I still had engine oil today and found that it is really black. Is it suppose to be this black or is it normally this black??

"this black" meaing what exactly? i'll answer your question if you can tell me what bolt this goes to.

oil is normaly black, yes. your fine. what you dont want is green(anitfreeze), or chocolate brown. black is good!

But black does mean it needs to be changed. New oil is clear and oil that's been ran for awhile is a dark brown (not chocolate colored, just not black) but if your oil is coal black you need to change it and your filter relatively soon.

Its good to change your oil every 3,000 or so. I've ran mine closer to 4500 and the oil was in bad shape. Dont be lazy like me.

Im 50% done with an oil change right now and my mom hasnt returned with the oil/filter yet. I've been sitting here for 2hrs. Shes probably shopping IMO. /endrant

if your lucky like me, the oil just naturally changes itself out every 3k or so....i just add a new quart or so every month, lol. (in all seriousness, i DO change my oil).

oil should NEVER look "black". it will get a dark brown color...thats normal...but it shouldnt be dark black, that means you need to change it ASAP.

Yea by the looks of it I'm pretty sure its dark brown. Btw this question sounds noobish but where is filter located?

Look under the car, its right by the oil pan. You cant miss it under there

anyone ever notice in the owners manual is recommends changing the oil every 7500 miles... i was lookin at mine the other day to check my mileage and service records. I was like ummmmm wtf... i have a 98 gs too.

Little tidbit of info.......when you remove your old oil filter, make sure the seal comes off with it before putting your new oil filter on.

under "proper" driving conditions.. most people (almost everybody) falls under the "harsh" driving conditions which warrant changes at approximatly 3000 miles..

when my dad had the car, he'd go around 7500 (and sometimes 9000) miles without changing the oil, but then again, they were all highway miles (proper conditions). I bet if it were every 3000 miles, my car would run so much better now with a hell of a lot less piston slap.

I was seriously doing this for a while with the 2.4L LOL

My automotive machinist teacher always told me that when oil is black it has been overheated and cooked. Also it looses most of its lubercation when overheated like that. I could be wrong though.

You were expecting to not have any man? LOL. Keep tabs on your oil son. Regular oil changes will save your ass in the long run. Plus it makes you look good to other car guys like us. :thumbsup
