71472, Generator field not switching properly Posted by biltrite, Mar-25-04 03:53 PM
Hey guys,
My CEL has been coming on every once in a while and it always gives the exact same reading. 12-64-41-55.
64 = Catalytic converter efficiency failure.
41 = Generator field not switching properly.
This has been going on since last summer and I don't know what to do. I've checked the alternator, battery, ECU, and I've grounded my car but it still keeps giving me the same CEL codes, every single time! To top it up, every single light in my car flickers like crazy at idle. The more stuff I turn on, the more it flickers. Can anyone help me out here? Please?

Did you actually take the alternator out and have it tested? Check your battery cables, connections on the alternator, and even the main 120 Amp fuse in the underhood fuse block. That fuse has 2 small bolts that hold it down, be sure those are tight too.

alt. is going bad. the flickering is a result of a/c ripple not being filtered by the diodes in the alternator. notice any whine in the speakers?
BTW, i recommend and highly endorse the alternators from www.4alterstart.com
edit: BTW, thank you for looking up your own CEL codes, that always helps us a bunch. :thumbsup
