I know there was a thread about this a while back but I cant seem to find it anywhere on the search. I am having my motor being put back together now after my rebuild and I am debating putting my timing belt cover back on. My original one cracked in the process of removing it. Is it safe to have to go without the timing belt cover??? Satan wants $124 for it so you can see my concern. Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated as I need to let the shop know before 5 today.

i've been without it for years.... umm.. not a prob... its your $$, but its not needed... just keep your fingers out of there.

I've seen people go without the top part but not the bottom. As far as I'm concerned thet's the most precious area in your motor. Wrap it up!

LOL....I approached the parts department at Brandon Mitsubishi here in Tampa and told them about the link, they were like "that is impossible...no one has these because they are Official Mitusbishi covers...." I laughed at him and showed him the price that I printed out from that website and then he said...eh you dont need them anyway.

yeah i have it cut just below the bottoms of the gears

I'm a little worried though, my new tires throw up a lot more road crap so the chances of an odd pebble flying into one of the tiny spaces where they'd cause carnage are probably a lot greater...

What I was thinking was just enclosing the bottom part of that area. Let me see if I can explain this, there is a splash guard on the bottom of the engine compartment in front of the UDP/Crankshaft is. I was going to go to my auto store and get an extra splash guard for $10 and just enclose the bottom part so there are no pebbles hitting or getting lodged in the belt. Do you guys think that would work??

You should use both covers in their entirety.

I believe its worth waiting for Conicelli to ship you the covers.

Or, if you wanna pay $120 for "official mitsubishi" covers :rolleyes you might even get a Certificate Of Authenticity signed by Satan himself! Just remember to tip well, Satan hates a cheapskate.

i drove w/out the bottom cover on for the entire life of my eclipse (about 4 years) with no problem at ALL, and that was on gravel, dirt, mud, etc.

of course i may have just gotten lucky, but i never saw a trace of material on the harmonic damper/timing belt. i would definatly leave the top uncovered, as you can do a quick inspection of the belt (to see if its shredding, etc.) quickly. definatly leave the stupid cover window out, lol....i hated that thing.
