71384, Burning oil?
Posted by 97_Talon, Mar-24-04 01:12 PM
I think my car is burning oil but not sure. I hesitate to say my car is burning oil because there are not the normal signs, smell or blue smoke. BUT, at almost 3000 miles after an oil change the low oil light comes on when I make a hard turn. Up until now I have been fine between oil changes, but this has happend just before the last 3 changes. Every time I am changing the oil and filter and fill the oil up to the full mark. Don't know if the terminology is that my car is burning oil, but it is definately using it at a faster rate ;-) Is there anyhting that I could do for checks to figure out if this is the prelude to major engine work? Could it be due to the extreme cold in the northeast this winter? I have checked for leaks and nothing showing up on the garage floor. Anything recomendations are welcome. I am using Mobil Drive Clean 10W30 fyi.

Thanks

Marc

Change your oil to Castrol 20W50 and add a full quart of LUCAS Oil Additive (1qt Lucas, 3.5qt Castrol). Don't forget to change the filter too. This will give you a thick viscocity to help stop leaks, and the additives will help with the burning.

Wow, if your low oil light comes on, you are seriously low on oil. You should check the level more frequently. There are spun bearings in your future if not already.

yeah man seriously watch out! that's exactly what happened to me. I completely cooked the #4 and some of #3 bearings. Not fun. one day out of the blue oil will just GUSH out of the bottom of your block. My problem was that the shrapnel from spun bearings clogged oil holes and so no more lubrication and the problem just progressed. I suggest pulling the oil pan if you can and check for very small metal flakes. Also check the back of the block near the belts and stuff. thats where most of mine leaked out. good luck.

P.S. the check oil light comes on at like 7PSI. oil pressure is supposed to b3 60 cruising and 25-30 at idle. so when it comes on your pretty muck F^cked!

and if it does blow, just one more reason to go turbo.
thats what im doing right now hehehehe

I would have to say DO NOT use Lucas oil addatives. Don't put anything in your oil, just use good oil. I have had more luck with STP products, but I still do not believe in addatives. If you have bad seals nothing is going to fix them, you need to replace them. Just hope it's not your valve seals. They are a bitch to replace.

I run Castrol Syntec 20w50 and have no problems. I'm approaching 100k and i'm just now getting a slight VC leak.

Yeahh
me too.

I am having that problem since I bought the car.
I tough was the head gasket and I changed even thought it gave me more compression (210 psi) I won't regret of doing that. But still the M&%*%^ F*&^*$ oil still leaking on my car. I don't know where.
I don't see any blue smoke even thought once in a while I can smell a weird smell but that's it.
What I am thinking that the problem with mine car is the sealant of the valves. (Maybe I am wrong).

So you better check the compression of the cylinder. To see if there is a leak by the head gasket.

So if somebody else knows something let me know. Please.

My car is a 95 eclipse GS. With 125.000.miles

Thanks in advance
ALEX.
