So im on the highway and i decide to punch my car from second gear... im idling at 4k in second gear and punch it, shift to 3rd and put into neutral at around 70mph... everythings fine then suddently i hear all this griding and noise on the right side of my car like i ran over a tire shreddings or whatever...so i pull over and check but nothin... then i pop my hood and the cam gears are making a really bad noise like its rubbing or somethings caught inside them.... then i notice that my power steering/ac belt is gone along with the other belt, which is what again?? so i start goin again and when i acclerate that area gets louder and louder as my rpms get higher.... somethin in the cam gear area.... =o( waht did i break or what do i need to replace..... =o( i juss got my car back after waitin 8 months fixin the engine due to money problems...pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeez any info or advice will help.....

P.S the car runs fine except all that noise and grinding, but 100% there is something wrong cuz of knocking and rough idling

That has happened to almost EVERY 2g owner...For some reason our belts like to fly off.
Usually alt and PS belt do to high revs, misshift ect. ect.

I would not run your car till you figure out what is rubbing your cam gears, Well unless you like rebuilding the motor.

I bet you have a peice of belt in the cover area...take off the cover and check before you bend some valves.

oh my god.... i sure hope you didnt tear your timing belt. Sheesh, I think my heart would just drop to the floor if that happened. I hope its nothing serious bro. But I cant help but wonder- :shrug

dammmmmn....=o( im so freakin sad right now, ive put like a 3g dent in my dads wallet and ive only had the car about 3 weeks after waitin 8 months to get it back..... timing belt?? wouldnt the car not run correctly if i did break it?? that idea of maybe somethin got into the cam cover is a good guess, but id have to drive about 15 miles to be able to work on it

if he tore his timing belt, it'd be a lil worse than this...especially after he said that the car runs fine besides the noises....

yeah thats what i was thinking, but still both belts are gone... AC/Power and alternator??

both belts are gone? Dont your car need these to run as well? It does sound like something is in there. At first thought, i was thinking maybe something happened to the timing belt where it was rubbing aginst it- Like mentioned above, I wouldnt drive it anywhere until you find out. you dont wanna make things worse

your car can run with no PS belt, mine pops off all the time at WOT because its new and still stretching a bit. the alternator however, you will only be able to run your car until it sucks all the juice out of your battery, then you're owned...you arent goin anywhere. your car uses the battery to start the car, then runs off the alterantor (generator, if you will) sounds to be like when the belts popped off they may have lodged themselves in the timing belt area by the cam gears. were the belts (AC/PS, and ALT, not timing) ripped up at all? or did they come out of the car? FYI, your car wouldnt even run if the timing belt was torn up. any CEL's? a peice of the frayed belts may have lodged in your cam gears or something and maybe made it skip a tooth

thanks man alot!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! the belts are totally gone, prolly still on the freeway somewhere... why would the cams skip a tooth... im still hoping that somethin is inside the cam cover... but there is still a LITTLE rough idling.... and knocking banging of the cams... there is definately something wrong but i dont know what, if THERE IS somethin inside the cover and i took it out, im pretty sure there WOULD still be a problem cuz of the cams running rough...

you shredded your:
power steering/ac belt
alternator belt

replace them, and youll be fine. its no big deal. yes you need your alternator belt to run. the car will run, but shortly thereafter die because nothing is charging the electrical system. youll basically be running on your battery.

no you dont need your power steering/ac belt to run. i run without power steering or ac, and im fine, lol.

both belts are between $10-17 each. kelly springfield belts are around 10-12, and the better quality goodyear gatorback belts are around $15.99.

Take the access port cover off and take a look inside it should only take a minute. Maybe when the belts came off they hit the timing belt cover and now its rubbing on the camgears.

Why would you punch it in 2nd on the highway to start off with? Planning to hit redline?

Sounds like PS belt to me. You need to get in there with a flashlight or something and check for shredded pieces of belt where they should not be. At the best, they might just rub somewhere and put unnecessary wear on a pump or something, worst case, they burn up your t-belt and your dad makes you sell the car and get a bus pass, since he's not going to want to drop another grand into a new head. ;)

Okay i did some reserach and ive come to a conclusion!!!!!! Its the water pump....correct?? i think this already has happened to me, cuz i know this sound and scenario but i never asked what was the problem when it happend about 3 years ago.... is this a logical answer??? if so... how much total would it cost to change the water pump, tensioner and pulleys??? ill prolly pay this out of my own pocket.... i learned you have to change those at the same time through the search engine =o)

ohh shit if its the water pump you are owned...that belt conects to the cam gears...which could mean you have valve damage....

Some of you people need to chill out wiht the valve damage shit.. DOnt scare the guy. If his car is running normally except for the grinding noise he does not have valve damage. The timing belt would need to fly completely off or have skipped several teeth before something would happen to the valves. Ad if there was valve damage the car would run like ass if it ran at all. Is it possible that when your acc belts flew off that they cracked the timing belt cover? If the cover touches the belt or camgears it will make a griding type noise. If it is you water pump I suggest you do not drive it. If the pump ends up freezing then you will have some problems.

i dont think my valves are bent as of yet...hehe, but is it a good chance that my water pump broke?? scratch out that the cams are grinding against something, i checked and everything is clearance is fine... 100% sure that its a mechanical problem.... its not a "grinding", its more like parts rattling due to being broken... if a water pump breaks or dies what exactly happens???

Just two days ago I sent off for my car to get the timing belt , waterpump ect changed. The waterpump at autozone with a lifetime warranty cost me $40.99 + tax. which isnt that bad IMO. Good luck with finding out exactly whats wrong

No way it's his water pump. That just sounds like belts are flying around imo. I had my alt. belt fly off courtesy of the "professionals" at Mitsu after my 60k check up. I would just check for pieces of belt all over and go from there.

Ever think you may have redlined it and broke a rocker in your valvetrain? It won't kill your engine but will cause rough idle and a lot of noise. If your engine was turnning all your accessories then suddenly threw off the belts and you were at a high rpm that is a possibility.
