Gentlemen,

I've been having this intermittent starting problem with my car lately. About twice a week my car tends to just crank and crank, this happens in cold mornings, warm afternoons, at night, when the car is cold and when it's hot. Most of the time if I just sit in the car and give it about 15 - 20 cranks, the car will finally start up and runs fine. Sometimes instead of just cranking and cranking, it will fire up, choke for a sec and then turn off, then I'll have to sit there giving it 20 cranks to start it up.

So far I've checked the basics, battery, plugs, plug wires, o2 sensors are good, and I replaced my starter. I'd like to see if anyone here's has had this similar issue.

LOL, yeah, same here. I've been having all kinds of problems and it seems various things just decided to die at the same time. A few discussions with Thura, Dino, Derek (etx), and Todd (vx100) have lead me to believe it could be my FPR. If you're not getting correct pressure to the injectors they will not spray and atomize the fuel but rather squirt it out like a squirt gun. You would think this would lead to less fuel but in fact it leads to more, and it causes you to run rich. At start up it will flood your engine which is EXACTLY how mine is behaving.

Get yours tested too, I'm doing mine soon....race ya ;)

How do you test the FPR to see if its working properly, and where in the engine bay is this located?

Depends on what year you are man. If you're 97+ like me the FPR is back between your fuel pump and your fuel filter. There is a test port on the end of the fuel rail and I think a shop can hook up to that to test it. Not exactly sure yet cuz I haven't gone.

If you're 95-96 then the FPR is on the end of the fuel rail and I would imagine you'd have to hook up a gauge to test it.

My 95 has the exact same problems too. What exactly is the FPR? Also, my CEL keeps coming on with the codes 12-64-41-55. Code 64 means catalytic converter efficiency failure and code 41 means generator field not switching properly. I just changed my catalytic converter bout a year ago, so I'm guessing that's not the cause and what does "generator field not switching properly" mean? I can't seem to locate the problem. I've checked my battery, my alternator, my ECU and I've even added some ground wires but the CEL still keeps coming up. Sigh. Along with the CEL, every single light in my car from the headlights to the dash lights flicker like hell. Any ideas? I really could use some help here too.

I'm still having this problem but I might have a solution, i just want to get your guy's input and opinions on this. Do you know that sound that is made when you turn the ignition to turn the dash lights on? I mean the buzz that comes from the passenger side of the car. Well I just noticed that whenever my car fails to start, this buzzing noise is nowhere to be heard. After switching the ignition back and forth several times, I got it to sound off again and guess what? The car started up just fine.

Well i've been playing with it and my starting issue seems to be connected to the loss of activity of this buzzing sound, which I am assuming to be the fuel pump. Most of the time, the pump will prime up normally but sometimes it does not. Now my question is, would this be a bad pump on it's way to failing 100% or could something else be hindering the pump from normal operation?

This seems to be a cut and dry question and answer, but just for grins, do any of you agree with me?

im also having intermittant start up problems that sound just like yours.. its very random and sometimes the car will start just fine and sometimes it takes many cranks.. i know its not the battery and i highly doubt its the starter..

its either something ignition related or fuel related.. onece the car is started it drives just fine with no noticeable problems.. its just starting it that has become a nusiance...

if it is fuel related i sure hope its nothing too expensive.. im getting tired of dumping money into this car these days...

i wonder if there is an easy way to check the fuel pump to see if its going bad...
