71223, Dont let this happen to your Thermostat!!
Posted by djtrickee, Mar-22-04 12:11 PM
So lately I have been having some weird idle problems as well as temp problems.
When driving around town and in stop-and-go traffic, my temps are fine, but when cruising on the highway or for an extended period of time the temp would drop all the way to cold.

Today in the fine 85 weather here in Denver (an anomoly to say the least!) I discovered this...

Yea. it exploded. into many pieces. This is all i could dig out of the thermostat housing. I dont even want to think about where the rest of it is. Hopefully it just dissolved.. hahaha

If you are having weird problems, check the thermostat. Its easy to check and easy to fix.

funny thing is, some mechanic told me to add some coolant. i was laughing so hard inside because i already told him my car is running too cold.

HAHA!
I have been preparing for just such a problem. I have everything but the new rad cap ready to go in this week sometime. My problem stems from a crusty cap leaking and causing a lack of proper pressure in the system, which leads to more of that odd, temp fulctuation shit. :P

Heh, I cleaned my t-stat housing of all the crusty junk and now I can't get my damn radiator hose to seal. Every time I stop my car there's smoke coming out of the hood cuz it's blowing coolant all over my engine LOL.

be thankful its a failsafe theromostat and it didnt fail closed. you could drive it like that for the short trip to autozone and fix it in the parking lot. was that oem or the howell 160?

that's beer

mine already did that last year, so I drove 4.5 hours freezing cold down to school, it was about 15 degrees out, and snowy and there were massive drifts too! talk ahout a sucky ass drive! mine didn't break all the way, but it did bust open, if I revved high enought the temp would shoot up, then after a while it would drop to nothing again.

Im sure glad to know mine is not like that! Recently I went to autozone and bought a 160 because I think my other one wasnt opening up all the way or something... anyways; I havent got my car hooked up but its been acting up a bit, and someone suggested it was the coolant temp sensor. Would that also cause your thermostat to fall apart like above? :twitch woa

hrm, not real sure on that- but i bought the highest temp. that autozone had, which turned out to be the most expensive, but it has a lifetime warranty ;) so its all good

I think the idea is to get a lower temp t-stat so that it opens sooner and keeps the engine cooler. I would guess that a hotter one would allow the engine to run at higher temps. :shrug
