71080, Installed resistor...CEL came back...WHY??? Posted by davo345, Mar-20-04 04:24 AM
I just installed a resistor inline with the black o2 wire for the downstream o2. i drove around all day without a CEL, then while coming home last night, it popped up. I just cant seem to get rid of it. any suggestions? could the resistor have burned out or something of that sort? Any help would be GREAT :).

Did use you use the proper resistor? Did you solder it to the wires? They need to be soldered to make a good connnection, because if it wasn't then that can raise the resistance value and trip the CEL. I've had mine on my 98 for over a year and a half, without a CEL. 1/4 watt, 1 Megaohm resistor 5% tolerance

ya, i did solder it. but i am a novice when it comes to soldering...maybe the connections arent as good as they could be?
the resistor i got from SILVERNT, so i am assuming it is the correct one.
it just doesnt make sense to me that it worked for the whole day, and then just stopped working. :shrug .

haha...and now after racing a 328i (and winning :)), the CEL is back....rofl...
i think i am going to resolder the connection and get a new resistor while i am at it.
any other ideas?

just make sure to not use too much solder. The more exposed wire, the more power loss. The more wire you have, the higher the resistance also. Try to keep the exposed wire to a minimum.

This is going to sound stupid, but my bro said that every once in a while he'll get a CEL...pull over, take off the gas cap then put it back on and the CEL will go away. Is he bullshitting, or is this possible?

Mine does the same thing. I just keep my Actron code scanner in the car and reset when it comes back on. Easier than keeping the laptop in there all the time. I am about to get the high flow cat from ERT though.

What Actron code reader to you own, and how much was it? i am kinda interested in having this device anyway...this situation may give me the incentive :).

why spend the money on that when you could buy a data logger, which does the same thing + more? you can also tune with it

any links and prices to an affordable datalogger?

I got the cose scanner from Autozone for $150. I got it fir its size and its easy to use and leave in the car. I also have the OBD-2 software on my laptop for datalogging but it is a pain in the ass to keep luging around so I got the code scanner too. If you have a laptop you can get the software and cable for under $150 from OBD-2.com . Sorry for the late reply. I've been busy trieing to get may car back from the body shop.
