70852, oil pan replacement Posted by rgirard413, Mar-16-04 04:40 PM
The other day i was driving and hit a mean bump, ended up putting a hole in my oil pan. So i ordered a new one with a gasket. are these pretty easy to replace? Anyone ever done it before. Also, is it possible to heat the bolts holding it on there to prevent them from breaking?

Don't heat the bolts, they don't need to be.
All you have to do is drop the cross member and then unbolt it. Reverse to install.

More or less direct quote from my Haynes:
"Apply a bead of RTV to the oil pan flange and smear small dabs of sealant across the seams where the oil pump housing meets the cylinder block"

It's easy.
If you have small hands and small tools then there is no need to drop the cross member.
There are 2 small brackets that run across the pan which you may have to remove.
The pan bolts have an extremely low torque setting. Just snug them in with a wrench
Have fun :)

yeah man 9 ft/lbs, you dont need any thread locker or anything on them, just be careful not to over torque them, b/c they arent very sturdy and break easily, so 9-10 is plenty for them, there are 13 bolts total, all are 10mm... the rtv sealant is the best stuff to use and you can get it for a few bucks at autozone, as uber said, the crossmember doesnt have to be taken off, and those 2 brackets, I just took off and I cant tell you where they are, I am pretty sure they serve absolutely no purpose, maybe some sort of heat shield or something, but all they are is a pain in the ass b/c they are in the way. be very careful when putting the 3 bolts in where the oilpump is, that is where the threads are most fragile, trust me I know, I broke off 4 oilpan bolts the first time I changed mine out, luckily my engine was out and I could get them out very easily, 3 broke off in the bedplate and the other one broke and completely stripped out the threads in oil pump.. I was torquing them to 30ft/lbs.. why b/c I couldnt find my chiltons and someone from the old eclipse club told me that was the specs.. dumb shit, and so was I for believing it.. 9 is plenty trust me.. g'luck
