I've been having a power steering fluid leak for a couple weeks and I checked to see where it was coming from. Took a looky under the car and on my passenger side the steering rod boot is ripped. Can the boot be replaced like a CV-boot? Or am I just screwed. THanks

i had the same problem..i had to replace my whole Rackinpinion(how ever that is spelled):(

Can I go to Mitsu and just get the boot? I don't really want to have to buy a whole new rack and pinion for a stupid ripped boot. If I can't find one I'll just epoxy it and hope no leaks

If you are leaking through that boot then your rack is shot. You will have to buy a new one, or used. You can do thatever you want to the boot but once it fills with power steering fluid it will begin to push out of the boot and continue to leak. That boot is there to keep water and dirt out so the seals do not become damaged. Your seals have gone bad and you only have one choice.

I have a spare one for sale in the Sale section if you decide to fix it.

I had the same problem, the seals in your rack & pinion are shot. I bought a refurb replacement at pepboys for 110 with a lifetime warrantee after turning in my core, and I had it installed for another 100 bucks.

How hard is it to replace the rack and pinion?

Umm, that boot is for the inner tie rod, which is a replaceable part.

are the only symptoms a leak of powersteering fluid from the boot? I actually think im having that problem as well, except it steers and drives fine... the leak is quite slight- wouldnt have noticed it if i hadnt parked in the clean garage and saw something was leaking a bit.

The rack can leak at the hoses connections or out of either side at the boots. If it is leaking from one side it may mean the seals are shot on the other. Racks have an equalizing tube so that when you turn you don't "inflate or deflate" the boot more than normal. That tube allows fluid migration between the sides. They are relatively easy to change and then an alignment should immediately follow. You really need to ensure that when replacing it you center it or "neutralize it" so that steering issue don't creep up afte it is done.
In any case it sounds like the seals in both racks are shot and you only have one of two options Rebuild ( not cost effective) or Replace.
