70122, does it matter which cam i rotate 180*....
Posted by tim97rs, Mar-07-04 01:02 PM
as long as the timing marks on the gears and crank all line up? i.e.- intake dowel down and exhaust dowel up. or does it need to be the other way around when timed correctly i.e.- intake dowel up and exhaust dowel down and timed correctly.

right now with timing mark lined up, both dowels are down. can i pull the exhaust gear(easier), rotate exhaust cam 180 and replace the gear and be good to go? (with proper timing of course)

just make sure the MARKS on the middle of the gears are pointing at eachother, they're little indents in the cam gear sides itself. who gives a shit where the dowels are

Uh, I hope he gives a shit where the dowels are, since they can only be one certain way for proper timing...I know one is up, and one is down, but I don't use aftermarket gears, and the stock gears can only go on one way. Take your stock gears, put them on to get the cams set right, line up the marks, THEN take the gears off, then set on your aftermarket gears, and the timing marks should be right on. I've had to do this before with the Fidanza gears on Soulcontroller's motor..the timing marks are all retarded on those shitty gears..

ive never even noticed where the dowels are, i also use stock gears and the stock timing marks like whats supposed to be used, installed way more 420a timing belts that ive wanted to, never had a problem.

so wait, i know the stock gears only go on one way, how do aftermarket gears go on?

good suggestion on using the stockers, lining them up, and then using the aftermarket gears. i didnt know he was using such a PITA aftermarket gears

I just dont see what the f*ck you are talking about.

It could be that you have aftermarket timing gears. But My gears the dowel only goes in the grear 1 way. So when the timing is ligned up and lined up with the timing mark on the crank. You're A OK.

i have AEM's and they have each 2 dowel slots 180* from each other, that makes them interchangable. thats how i can have the marks lined up but have one cam 180* off. that help ya... need a pic?

holy shit, yea....i get it now. sorry dude! i didnt know they were like that. im used to working with the stock gears and they only go on one way. yea flip those guys around, thats your timing culprit, hope you dont have any belt valves now

Yeah, the Fidanza's are the same way for some reason...Of all the timing work I have done, i never really payed attention to how the dowels line up, but one is down, and one is up, which one is which, I don't know, BUT they need to be right. You just can't guess which one goes up, and which one goes down. Like I said, put the stockers on, and line up the timing notches, and then take the stockers back off, then put the AEM ones on. Two of the timing marks on the AEM's *should* line right up..get what I'm saying? I know the AEM's had issues with the timing marks not lining up properly before, dont know if that has been addressed yet though..

matter of fact dude, if you can...post up a picture and maybe a mod will make this thread a sticky about the problemos associated with the cam gears

here ya go! thanx to extremeRS for the stock gear idea... im in good shape cause the intake is down and the exhaust is up on the stock gears so all i have to do is pull the exhaust gear, rotate, replace and hopely all is good!

i pray to god my $250.00 S/S valves could take a little abuse, they better have not bent after only a few turn-overs!!!

it only take a few degrees of rotation to bend valves. Doesn't matter if they're SS or not, if any of them came in contact with another valve or a piston top, they're bent. Keep your fingers crossed.

and i assume there is no way to tell if they are bent without taking off the head and pulling them? what will happen if i fire it over and have some bent valves?

Damn. All these years reading about how the AEM gears are messed up, I never actually saw a closeup of them installed. Yeah, thats pretty far off. I've heard alot of times that pople just mark the new gears in refernce to the original ones. Also, I never quite understood why it came up so much abou the dowels being up or down - the AEMS have 2 dowel holes? Thats pretty fucked up. I guess the Neons use the other dowel hole? :shrug

CLARIFICATION:

the marks are off in the above pic because when i was removing the bolts the gears rotated a bit, they ARE NOT off when aligned correctly. they have been corrected to read right, they are just off that much becuase i didnt turn them back after removing the bolts.

if you look at the left gear you can see a thin grey line above the thicker white line. the grey line is the AEM mark, the white is the corrected mark by me.
on the right gear, the grey line is just below the white one (you cant see it very well), so you can see how timing WOULD be off if you went by thier lines.

For what its worth,
I have some AEM cam gears and when I installed them I put it so I can read degree markings on but gears at the same time. So say the intake cam gear has the degree markings on top, the ex cam will have the degree markings on top too. Funny thing is, I never had any problems with my cam gear marks not lining up. the laser etched marks on the cam gears for aligning them lined up perfect on my car, and i bought my cam gears like 2 years ago.

You may as well do a compression test first. Turning the engine over wont do any more damage than what is already done (if there is any). Do NOT try to actually start the motor first though. Running the engine with a few bent valves can cause major damage. If your compression numbers look good, then everything is fine. If you have low-0 compression in any cylinder, you need to take the head off.

If you are in question which way the dowels go, pull your valve cover. There are two holes, one in each cam that can be used to hold the cams still while tightening the cam gear reatining bolt. Both of them should up at TDC.

i just got my fidanza's in today, and they only have one place for the dowels to go, not two like the aems. Is this a new design?

Edit..heres a picture..dont mind my bubba teeth

No that's how Fidanza's are but they have timing marks on each side, which still allow you to put them both ways.
