69989, SRS Lights... help Posted by gilee_8, Mar-05-04 08:57 AM
Sup guys. Well, now that I totally finished my own baby eclipse. and waiting for my Highflow Cat and Greddy Evo 3" exhaust to come and put it on, my whole car is great!
Now it's time to fix my g/f car (the black eclipse) Ok, it's about the SRS and Cel.
Let me start off from last year. Got her car from NJ, then register, and found out the car was salvaged but somehow the title is not indicating that, so DMV sent us a new title with salvage on it (fucking asshole seller). Now 4 months ago, I just fixing her car a little and found out no CEL, SRS, etc lights aren't there at the gauge. So I put the bulb back in and found out CELL and SRS is on (been on since who knows when)
Now, the CEL is not the question. I pull the code, one is O2 and other is EVAL leak. O2 after resetting the ecu, is gone for 4 months, so that code is old or some shit. Then the Eval leak, I am too lazy to fuck with it.
Now, the SRS, I don't konw if it's the airbag, or whatever the search I did saying changing fuse, or reverse light they talked about in the posts before hand.
But I want to know if there is a way to read the error from my ODB-II scanner? or like how to fix the problem?
Coz I don't want crash, then found out the airbag doesn't pop out.. lol.
Thanks all!! Gil

A standard OBDII scanner should display the airbag codes w/ the rest of them. I know a pocketlogger will.

Why don't you find out the problem before trying to resolve it?

Don't Crash. My SRS is on since I disconnected the drv airbag for the MOMO. I wonder if the other bag would still pop if I hit something?

going to satan and having them reset it is the only way. bring your lube too gil, cuz from what i hear its like 80 bux for them to hook up their tool and punch a few buttons. this is one thing that cannot be solved by just disconnecting the battery

It tells you that there is a problem with the SRS system. Like someone was in an accident and decided that airbags were too expensive to replace, so theyjust stuffed the spots with fakes. I've seen it done.
Disconnect the battery for at least 5 minutes imo. Remove the airbags. The one on the steering wheel comes out with the bolts on the back of the wheel. The pass side comes out after you drop the glovebox and unbolted it from underneath. Check to make sure you actually have airbags in that thing. If you do, then I'm betting the sensor needs to be reset or replaced.

Ok for the person who posted if it there bag would work if ur light is on it shouldnt work kind of like a fail safe in the system in case something is wrong in wiring so ur passenger side wont work sence u have the aftermarket steerig wheel on the drivers side.
as far as the light see if u can hook it up to a scanner and get some codes it could be a number of things basically when u start the car if u car is fine the srs will stay on for a few secs then shut off. if it is unable to charge the voltage backup reserve it will stay on it could be a module, sensor or even just a wire rubbing on metal.
Just becareful it only takes 3 volts to set them off so if not real humid there and u r producing abunch of static electricity be real careful because that could set them off as ur taking them out

All the cars ihave dealt with, you have to have the dealer handle SRS lights. There is no scanner on the market that will read a SRS light. I have the Snap on mty 2500 which is top of its class from when i was an automech and it will not read SRS codes either. I dont have a pocket logger but if it will read them then i need one.
You may have a light because at one time the airbags deployed. Simply plugging a new airbag in will not reset the light and perhapps the seller found that out. As far as your evap code, check all your vacuum hoses, if ok reset the ecu with a scanner. Our cars have a leak detection pump that upon startup pressureizes the evap system momentarily to catch and leaks. If you go to a gas station right away when the car is cold and remove the gas cap while it is running....you will set that code off and no light will show on the dash. Reset it and run the car for 5 mins and re-read with a scanner....shouldnt have a code. the leak detection pump only presurizes the system for a few minutes. Be careful at the dealer they will sell you a new leak detection pump for 400.00 and not check to see if it fixed the problem. (Tyson Chry in joliet IL)
If you remove one airbag the system is now shut down by the SRS ECU and no other airbags will deploy.
good luck but this should get you on the right track.

Yeah there is a scanner u can use its called a ngs i think. we were using it earlier at school to pull some codes also u can use snapon u just have to make sure u have to right software. I'm not sure if the control module in eclipse's have to be replaced if air bags have been fired some cars require that they do while others will store a code that can be erased and the module can be reused probably have to call the dealer to find out that info.

what was that..my post didnt come through right......
My snap on is updated to 2000. another mech at the shop i worked for tried to reset a crown vic SRS light and the snap on would not do it. I have never seen the option to read them on mine. Is the software you are referring to a separate SRS cartridge because there is no software like computer downloading done to the MT 2500. I guess i will have to ask the Snap on dealer to see if i can get another cartridge to read it...probably cost me another 750 like the last upgrade.
