First let me start off by saying - GOD DAMMIT!!!!!!!!!!!!!. There, just had to get that out. I feel a little better now. So here's the deal: I was driving down the street at about 60 mph, when something just didnt feel right, then the car dies on me. Well this same thing happened to me a few weeks ago when I broke my flexplate- so I thought I had gone through another one somehow. After trying to start it again(i know im a dumb ass) I thought to pop the hood and there it was- my timing belt hanging off my cam gears. Tomorrow Im going to reinstall the timing belt just to see what happens. But i have a feeling you all are going to tell me that I have 16 bent valves now dont I? So the next question is...how will I know if they are bent? and could someone please give me a detailed writeup or a link on how to replace them. I know how to get the head off, just dont know how to remove and re-install springs and retainers. Also, is there anything else I need to look for (like pistons or any machine work that will be required etc...) Thanks alot guys!

ouch, I feel that. what failed, tensioner, bearing, etc..? to test for bent valves, you probably are just going to get the worst idle ever when you put the belt back on. barring that, do a compression check. If you know how to take off the head, then from there u really should just take it to a good machine shop, and have the head decked and 3-way valve job w/ new valves. good luck

not sure what failed- probably me that failed. I just swapped cam gears last weekend. Guess i screwed something up. Dont really want machine shop stuff done. Just got screwed by one recently during my rebuild. I was wondering if I could just drop out the old valves and slide new ones in place- then reassemble? or do i have to have new valve seats or something?? Guess Im goin to sleep now to have nightmares about this shit.

damn man I feel ya. sorry to hear it, that sucks since all the work you've done, you are close to the same boat I'm in... when my timing belt snapped, I luckily did not bend any valves, how I dont know, sheer luck that the belt broke w/ the rods in half rotation or tdc or close.. hopefully yours did too.. g'luck man, I think if you actually bend a valve, just replacing them wont work, but I may be wrong.. g'luck peace

yeah, i hate to think of the possibility of internal damage. Hopefully I lucked out- but I doubt it. Belt didnt even break- just slipped off. Not sure if the tensioner slipped or broke or what. Anybody else know much about replacing valves?

if you didnt hear anything banging, im willing to bet your valves are fine....i know people say that if the timing belt breaks on our cars that the valves will always bend...but ive had 2 talons that sheered belts because of water pumps and nothing happend to them, and two first gens with bad belts that also didnt touch the valves...i guess theres just as much chance that they wont hit as to they will...hopefully you got lucky also

ive heard that the aem cam gears can slip sometimes because they only use three bolts to tighten down. Triple check them this time when you reinstall them!!!

Even if they did slip it would not cause the belt to fly off. The timing would just be off. Did you have a timing belt cover on??

actually the belt would slip off, say one gear came loose and the other didnt. One of the gears would spin freely then catch itself, while the other that is still bolted down spins and pushes the belt off.

you have JE 8:8's? well good news dood....theyre non interference (valves dont hit the pistons at TDC)...slap a new timing belt on and you might be just dandy :)

dont worry about it though man, we all have had a tear jerker with our cars im sure

no look at his Sig picture. No timing cover. I am not going to get into it, but whenever some honda/acura pops his hood to show off his Cam gears I pray hard that a pebble is going to spit up and start munching the parts.

For a street driven vehicle, PLEASE KEEP THE TIMING BELT COVER ON! For a show car fine. But it is not worth the risk. I know many will tell you they drive around without any mishaps but I do not think it is worth the risk.

The timing belt cover doesnt matter. A lot of cars come stock with no cover. Like the gst!

1. your right - no cover ( my screw up cuz I broke the old one into lots of little pieces once, never replaced it tho)
2. No longer have the AEM's, just swapped back to factory last week (too many timing issues with the AEM's on)- just wonder if my tensioner broke or I didnt get it on very good or something.
3. JE 8.8:1's have NO interference???? You positive about that?? If thats the case then I just gotta slap the belt back on (correctly this time) and I'm good to go??

P.S.- Anyone gotta spare cover they wanna get rid of?

haha no shit....but we don't know that yet untill his car starts and idles.

well, wont start at all...just turns and turns..then backfires occassionally. Bent valves? Or something to do with the fact that Ive dont the timing belt 12 times in 2 days and everytime the cam gear marks end up being off by 2 teeth?

run a compression test and that'll that you right away what condition your valves are in. i dont understand why your belt is always 2 teeth off though :shrug, ive done a 420a belt so many times and naver had that problem

i dunno about the non interface thing. i have cp 8.8's and im interface. i stuck the bottom end at toc, and turned the cam gears. and whala. they stopped. valves were hitting the piston. maybe je's are different, i dunno. try lineing u the cam gears perfect, then stick the crank sprocket a notch before toc, then stick the belt on. turn the crank sprocket to the right to get the waterpump, idlerpulley side semi tight. then let go of the tensioner. thats hopw i get mine.

I have je 8.8's and when my tensioner pulley bolt broke, i bent 8 valves. However, I did have my head milled to remove some pitting, so maybe you're ok. Get the belt on and do a compression test, or see if you can tell visually by watching your valve stems as you rotate the crank.

BTW,I think it was "Armond30" (Armond) who came on here and reported that the 8.8:1's were non-interference. I can totally envision that the amount of head milling/resurfacing that one does may effect whether or not your engine is interference or not. I'm not going to test the theory though! ;-)

i was working out earlier the combustion chamber size and the piston height and how far the valves opened with stock cams, then my fuggin computer crapped on me and i didnt want to input all the numbers again....but YES, milling has a huge effect on how far the valves are from the pistons at TDC, also...more aggressive cams would mess with interferance issues as well

Sorry about the mishap. Since the belt just slipped out, I'm going to guess the timing belt tensioner malfunctioned or it was not tightened properly. Good luck.
