69723, Cam Gear tuning..with a milled head Posted by REV_GSlow, Mar-01-04 11:11 AM
I know that i should use dyno time to really tune the car perfectly, but starting off after the install, how should i set the gears with my head being milled .050?

i've been wondering this alot too, im getting my head milled 35 thousands and i don't know exactly where to start.. (btw with 50 thousands have you had any clearance issues?)

i was told before the mill that 70 thousandths is the limit for our heads

whaaaaa 70 thousands holy schnickies i was under the impression it was 40 thousands before the valves enter the seats in the pistons... so your compression is 11.6:1 have you had alot of tuning problems with that? Im going really mild at 10.5:1 so that way if i ever win the lottery i can still turbo but with lo-comp pistons it would put me back at stock compression *back on topic haynes manual lists 40 thousands clearance when i was reading through it one day. I can't tell you how many shops said they wouldn't mill my head because we have "no clearance heads"

well I'm assuming since his car does run and he did have it milled 50 thousandths, eventhough timing may be shitty w/o the gears right now, it's safe, atleast in his case, well it works atleast I mean and I believe every 20 thousandths forwards 1 point of compression, therefore since stock compression is 9:6, that would put him at 12:1 according to my math. Which means when we put those gears on man, it'll take a bit of tuning, but I'm sure you will like the difference.

from all that i have read every four thousands is a 0.1 of compression so 20 thousands would be 10.1:1 and my 35 thousands will be about 10.5:1 (just like mike)

I believe it was said that every .050" you have the head milled, you increase the timing by 1 degree.
