69354, Why does nooone make a lightweight.....

Why does nooone make a lightweight crank pulley for our cars? I know underdrive pulleys are available for our cars, but I don't really wanna go that route if I can get the same gains with a stock sized pulley that is lightened. Am I missing something?

You want to use something other then hardened steel? (which i think the stock one is made out of)

why would you not want an UDP? AFX's is billet aluminum. A fraction of the weight of the OE damper. I am confused why you would not want the UDP. It will be less rotating mass on the crank as well as not making the crank spin the accessories as fast.

I'm betting he's just scared off by the prospect of having heavier power steering or having his battery die because alternator is being starved.

this absolutely will not happen, just get the UDP!!!!

My best friend has an UR udp on his 3/S and we both hate it. Turn on too many accessories at a stop and the engine dies. Plus, since hes now has a custom supercharger kit(thanks to much fabrication and luck...) the UDP lowers the boost. I'm just confused as to why if you can get the same gains with a stock sized pulley vs. a UDP, noone makes these. I'm thinking this could be a gold mine to whomever jumps on it first.

nobody makes them, and it would not be a "gold mine" because a little underdrive never hurt anyone! you're not going to supercharge your car, so why even mention this? Your friend really didn't plan his mods very well!! It sounds like quite the piece of shit!

Those types of comments are not needed. :thumbsdown

1. I dont want to underdrive my accessories at all.
2. AF/X pulley is aluminum, so is the 3SX stock sized pulley. The AF/X underdrives and the 3SX does not. Both give similar gains. I'd be much more happy with a stock sized pulley because you could retain stock sized belts, your lights wont dim, stereo wont suck, etc..

I'm surprised as how noone is making these. I've been a member of 3si for a while and those guys love the stock sized aluminum pulley. :shrug

I have never seen a UDP cause the lights to dim, p/s to be starved, or stereo to suck. Unless you are using some ghetto UDP that is overly small on small alternator car.

Either way a UDP on a DSM is not going to yield those problems. Do what you wish.

As said before, "to each his own"

You are probably correct, sir. I'd just prefer not to be underdriven.

But WHY?

uhm, a high percentage of everyone here has successful gains with it and no problems. your friend proabably has the wrong belt sizing or he's not tightning his belt to well. both AFX and UR pulleys are good, and w/o a doubt free HP. oh well you're missing out. most of us don't have that problem.

Unorthodox UDP's are 50% underdriven. You wouldn't noticed being underdriven that little.

With your ground kit woodley, an optima yellow top battery, and platnium terminals I get 14.0v at IDLE (increases slightly w/ more engine speed) w/ my AF-X 33% UDP. BTW my car/alternator have 150k miles on them.

UR udp's are only underdriven 20% but are LIGHT AS HELL compared to the stock. i wish i would have weighed it but it's like picking up a peanut compared to the stock one.

my car will sound like, bumbabumbubavrooooooooooooooomrooooooooahhhhhhhhhhhhh, kishhhhhh

VW= The joy of driving
DSM= The frustration of fixing

just get the AF/X UDP.

you will like it.

i've never heard a complaint about it, other than the fact that it's a PITA to take off.

IMO there are NO drawbacks to using this part. you will not notice a difference in power steering. your battery voltage will be 13.5+ volts at idle.

besides, the whole idea with an UDP is not that it turns the accessories slower, but that the new pulley has a much smaller raidus. a long time ago i took a course in Physics and learned about center of mass, laws of inertia, and other things. the greatest gains is because the pulley has a smaller raidus which brings all of the mass closer to the center. ever watched figure skating when they twirl around like a top and then they bring their hands close to their body and they speed up? same idea. the fact that it's made of high quality aluminum is another bonus, because aluminum is a lot lighter than steel.

aluminum also has a much higher heat expansion rate than steel. this means putting on the AF/X UDP is a breeze. stick it in the oven for about an hour at 500 degrees and it will slide right on the hub like a fat chick going down a slip and slide. oh, the mental images are horrible.

If an underdrive pulley causes the motor to DIE at idle... that just sends up a red flag for me. "someone" has obviously done something horribly wrong!!

lighten up dood, we're all friends here. are you to high strung to have a reasonable conversation without bashing someones car? just chill out like uber said, comments like that arent needed, they'll get you know where....you're going to have to learn that quick here on 2gnt

edit:

woodley, the af/x udp works wonders, i have it and i love it. i also have a custom ground wire kit and the alternator is ground, i see 13.9-14.0 volts at idle and around 14.3 while driving, its fine. or like ^^^ said, optima battery.

edit again:

they also sell high output alternators for our cars if you're seriously worried about it

I'm not trying to start anything I just don't want the guy to be scared of getting the UDP we're all complete fans of simply because his friends' car didnt like it!

Oops, I wrote an UR UDP is 50% underdriven, I knew it was ~15% larger, I just did my math the wrong way.

turbo8u, you always have good advice. thanks bro. points for you! looks like i'll be sending out some money soon. how necessary are the upgraded belts?

heh, no problem dude. and yes, i'd get some gatorback belts and say buh bye to any problems you'll with the bando belts they come with.

heres a link for the high output alternators if you wanna check that out too ;)
