Well I have been really curious if there is an available timing belt
for the 420a in a Gatorback form. The Goodyear site lists only one
timing belt (#40246) under eclipses yet specifies different #s for
Alt. & PS/AC for the Turbos and N/Ts. Made me wonder if 4g and 420a
used the same timing belt or Goodyear chose to make only one and did
not care to specify.

I started comparing #s on NAPA and Autozone to see what they gave for
numbers, and found out that NAPA did not have any timing belts listed
on their site, however Autozone has the 40246 as the timing belt # for
the 4g and 420a. Interesting. Either that or Autozone's tech staff
entered in wrong info.

Anyone have any insite to this? My last resort is to call Bob Kise
and ask him to list the Part #s for the timing belts of the 420a and 4g63.

I just asked my shop to get me a timing belt, and 10 minutes later a guy was there with my belt... LOL

To answer my own question:

I loaded up CAPS (forgot about that resource) and plugged in my VIN and searched for the timing belt part number. OE # is M04667611 for my car. Now I have not mastered using CAPS, is there a way to get vehicle info without entering a VIN? I do not know how... anyway I searched another forum and found someone who posted the VIN of their GST. Bingo. OE # is MD182291 with MD326059 listed under it. Superceding part number? If anyone is familiar with CAPS holla at me. I want to learn how to use the damn thing.

I emailed Goodyear and asked them what engine the timing belt was for, I will post the reply when I get it.

what the hell is caps? I'm not tryin to change the subject, but I'm interested in it.. sounds nifty (I believe that is the first time I've ever used that word), anyways AutoZone's computer fucks our cars up w/ the turbo eclipse alot, I'm not knockin autozone or anything, I live there practically, but if you order anything bottom half and some sensors for top half, and all sensors bottom half, they will be wrong.. guarantee it.. but yeah I have the gator timing belt, works like a dream.

CAPS is Mitsubishi Parts Lookup Program (CAPS - Computerized Automatic Part Searching System) that comes with the DSM backup service manual CD. Do you have the # lying around on a receipt per chance of your belt? I am not going to be able to sleep tonight if I do not figure this out.

ive just done timing belt changes on both the 4g and 420a... the 4g is a longer belt...not by much, but i have been tempted to try it being its about 25$ cheaper for some reason....i dont know what the hell is up, but i bought a gatorback belt for my 420a about a year ago for 35..now everyone wants 50-60$? wtf.... i can get a 4g belt for 20$..whatever

I got brake pads for a friend from there once and they had eclipse 2WD and AWD listed (didn't have an engine screen so he kept ignoring me saying I needed non-turbo 2wd pads), well they gave me the 2WD pads and when I went to put them on they were for a 2WD TURBO, uuurgh.

I will wait to hear from Goodyear and see what they have to say. It is apparent that people here with 420a's have the Gatorbacks so I think that it will work.

Again I will post Goodyear's response when I receive it.

The Good Year part number is 40246. Do not get the CD-246, which is the cheaper Kelly Springfield belt, that parts store seam to want to sell you as a real GoodYear belt. It's the one on my car now.

Your 40246 is right, if they have it in stock or order it it will be a bright green gatorback box, not the crappy red Springfield.

So if you end up knowing the actual part number for the Gatorback T-belt and both the accessory belts, this might be something for things we've seen before under BELT NUMBERS imo. :P Happy hunting!

BREAKING NEWS!!! The belt #40246 is for 420a's and better yet Goodyear sells the kit #GTK0246 which is the belt and the tensioner and idler pulley. No tensioner bracket, tensioner or water pump. I did not get the price for the kit, but I am sure it will be a viable solution for T-belt jobs. AZ crew, from now on holler at me when you need the kit, I can get it at cost =]

The box says for 95-99 eclipses (non-turbo), avenger, sebring etc and other 420a powered cars. Now I feel better that I found this out. ahhh...

does it come with a tensioner or not? This weekend I plan on having my timing belt changed. The Kit you describe sounds like something I should look into. Does autozone sell the kit with the pulleys? hey let me know, thanks

As I said before, it includes the belt, tensioner pulley, and idler pulley. No tensioner, tensioner bracket, or water pump. Most likely the tensioner bracket is fine (unless you are doing a t-belt job because it broke and the bracket may be F-ed). So all you need to order from the dealer is the tensioner and water pump. You can do the job without replacing either but it is a good idea to do it. Unknown if Autozone sells the kit (they sell just the belt) just make sure it does say Goodyear Gatorback on it if you end up buying it from them.

have the timing belt labeled, but now we do. The 40246 will fit an Eclipse
non-Turbo, and a 40167 will fit an Eclipse Turbo.
