6889, Can I hit my Rev Limiter if...
Posted by grneclipse, Nov-11-01 04:50 PM
I just got my car out of the shop tonite, and the mechanic HAD to drive it to make sure that everything was running ok. Well I'm a stage 2 turbo a/t, and this guy was just flying with my damn car, he drove it like a manual shifting from 1 to Drive. ON the last pass he was really gunning it and as he shifted into second, we hear a *bam, bam, bam, bam* i'm like what the hell, anyhow, do you think we just hit the rev limiter on it or fuel cut? It's probably nothing, but I'm freaking out, cause for some strange reason after making my intercooler piping smaller I'm hitting 10-12 psi instead of keeping it at 8 psi. Anyhow, thanks again guys

Dude I would be O so PISSSSSSSED if someone drove my car like that. In fact I would show up with a cop and an agent from the better buisness bureu and tell them how shit was going down at that particular machanic shop. Then I would take my car to Satan and make the shop who was fucking with your car pay for the bill to replace the tranny.

I DARE a mechanic drive my sh*t like that. He would get smacked up while driving! Anyway I'm not sure how easy it is to hit the limiter on autos but I've hit mine plenty of times accidently since turbo (1rst gear just goes too fast sometimes). No harm done as of yet I dont guess. Quite a display of unburned fuel and fire out the exhaust if you hit it hard.

If he was manually shifting the auto, he was waiting too long to shift and he hit the rev limiter. it won't kill anything, but its not good for the car either.

By the way, you better fix your boost creep problem or your engine will blow up.

You CANT hit the rev limiter in an automatic. the TCM will shift automaticly at red line.

leave your car in 1st and just gun it, as it gets to redline, the tranny will upshift automaticly. When i autoX, i leave it in second, cause its the only why to get the tranny to hold gears without upshifting in the middle of a corner. likewise, at the drag strip, i just turn OD off and leave it in 1st. the TCM will upshift before the limiter in every gear (just put it back into drive after the 1/4 mile mark to avoid hard downshifts as you slow down.)

this is why manually shifting our trannys does absolutely nothing. in hondas and other makes, the engine will rev until the limiter if you leave the auto in 1st, not so in our cars. our TCMs are designed to be basically full-proof (short of driver trying neutral drops and burn-outs)

Yup Ryan basically summed it all up. Our cars automatically shift no matter what gear you leave it in. It will never go past redline, and actually shifts at 6250 rpm.

Sorry if I misinformed anyone then. I was using my roomate's automatic TSi AWD as a model for all auto DSMs. He has hit his rev limiter many many times while manually shifting it.
I guess that is just another difference between the turbo and non-turbo DSMs.

Yea, we have chrysler trannies and chyrsler TCM's.

Many other makes can take advantage of manually shifting and getting a few extra rpms out of it, our cars just wont rev any higher. like i said, its bascially designed for tranny safety, not max performance. remember, the a604 is also found in Chrysler minivans :/ (among other chyrslers FWD cars)

you sure it wasnt audible detonation? pull your plugs and check em out with a good magnifying glass...

do you know where the noises came from, or was it just a loud bam bam audible in the cabin?

Has it done it again?
