68609, Now Im stuck at work, PLEASE HELP ME< whats wrong with this thing!!! Posted by Sean_neo, Feb-17-04 03:51 AM
Hey guys, Im gonna try to make this short, but I could REALLy REALLy use some help here. And Im talking points to everyone who contributes! Im driving to work today, when I left my place the car seemed fine...Now Im going down the highway, about 140km, and my car jerks a little, I look the CHEC ENGINE light flashes, Im continue driving, slow down a little, and it happens a few more times, but jerks more violently then the first....So I get off at the exit, and turn down the tunes, and it sounds like a loose bicycle chain, I dont know what it is, I was thinking the baring in one of my pullys might be bad, (my accessory drive belt has snaped twice odley enough)....But even when it broke I could drive, without noise, just no power steering......PLEASE HELP ME!
Oh yeah, and for some reason, the lower the rpm's the worse it seems :S
I will be at work and reading up on responces throughout the day, I really appreciate all input!!

it may be possible that your timing belt skipped a tooth... if you think that happened, first thing to do would be a compression test, which would show you if you have bent valves.
or you could have spun a bearing, but i'm pretty sure it has something to do with your timing.

not quite sure...but sounds like timing, misfire, or the pulley... don't forget to do the key dance if you can, and see if some codes pop up for you :thumbsup

Hey guys, I know I asked for input, but now you are scaring me, shit my timing, I hope I dident bust anything, I dont think it would be timing though would it, why would it quiet down at higher rpms?

If your timing skipped so it advanced that could cause the above ^.
I definately would not drive on it, and you should have pulled over the first time and had someone (or rented for free from autozone) a obd II code reader, or done the key dance as said above ^.

DAM DAM DAM, I can say one crappy thing about Canada is no autozone, theres not many places you can go to have your car read, and even less at no charge.....Especially for me, as they dont sell our cars up here :(

if you've been busting belts have you checked the rotation on all of the driven pullies? i've seen ac compressors seize, maybe that or the alternator or power steering pump is binding up the engine for a second causing the jerk, just a thought.

I had the same problem when I changed out my water pump. Dont know if you have had any work done but it definatly sounds like a skipped tooth on the timing from what you are saying. What I didnt know was that there is another timing gear on the bottom of the belt that was the problem. Mine screwed up when I put the crankshaft pulley back on after the water pump install. Also, have you ever had your timing belt replaced??? If the belt just started skipping, it may just be time to do so. If it is still running, great...Run it to a shop if you cant change it yourself and change the Timing Belt before you wind up Bending a valve and have to do a rebuild.

12=direct power input to the PCM has been disconnected within the last 50 key-on cycles
14=MAP sensor voltage
5=no code exists(could be a code 55 which states that there are no more error codes, meaning, end of code list)

the symptoms and codes are VERY similar to a problem I had with my NT a few yers ago on a trip to Florida. Try swapping out your plug wires. Sounds like one may be bad. Pull your plugs and let us know what the condition is. Always start with the simplest thing and work your way down...

Good news....you're not fucked...much. If the codes are correct, The MAP sensor isnt really hard to do. I would just replace it.

It IS easy but can be VERY pricey if you can't find a used one. And a bad plug wire WILL cause that code...

That's why I said not fucked much. Either way may be good for you. If you want to, do what eclipzgst suggested. I would then still run another test to make sure there are no other problems and if you can find a good used MAP sensor, buy it for future use. If not, shop for a new one.

I would change plug wires. John98GS sent me his stockers and I replaced all of mine and my car ran perfect. I had the exact same symptoms as you. My car would buck and hesitate under load in low rpms and had no power until 3000rpms. Change your wires IMO. goodluck.

UPDATE: Well seeing as it has been a record breaking cold winter here in Toronto, and I cant be without my car I had to drop it off at my grage. My mechanic, just from what I explained and a quick look over said he believes its with the timing, he will give me an update and I can go from there, Ill let you guys know what he finds in the morning, cus I cant be without my car for days while looking at this, and with 9am-8pm shifts I dont have time to do this on my own right now.....but I guess we can wait and see.

might be good news to you if it is correct. i had almost the same problem thought i skipped a tooth or two on my timing belt, but it ended up just being the tensioner pully. make sure they check that out as well. but at the same time i was throwin the timing belt skipped one tooth or more code. hope this will help you a little..

your crazy. You could've stopped at any autoparts store and picked up a set of wires that will cost you $30 and you'd be w/out car for a total of 5 min. Now, who knows how long it will be in the garage or how much it will cost. Garage is a LAST resort IMO. Hell, he could say it's ANYTHING and charge you whatever he wants when it could have just been the wires in the first place...

Well if thats how you feel about your mechanic then you shouldent go to him. My mechanic and my dad have been friends since they were kids, I dont need to worry about him punking me. Besides, he did my plugs and wires a year ago. From what I can tell I know its not that, it is either the timing, or the pully.

Yes, that is EXACTLY how I feel about mechanics.

Did he change the pulleys when he did the timing belt? If he didn't, he should've...
