I need my car running in about 45 minutes and the compression test isn't working! I disconnected the two relays behind the battery up on the firewall next to the master cylinder. In Corbin's writeup he said there should be two or four. Well I only saw two.

Anyway my problem is that the gauge isn't reading anything. What's the problem?

then you're not threaded into the head right and sealing air in there.

Isn't the point of the test to have air sealed in there so the gauge can read off of it? In Corbin's writeup it said to screw it in tight, which we did. It doesn't even sound like the motor is even moving to make any compression...I don't get it.

1) check to make sure the the part u screwed in has a check valve or it will not hold pressure
2) r u holding the throttle at wide open
3) how long r u turning the engine over?
if it does have the check valve and u r doing the things above right ur gauge is fucked
also make sure u got all the plugs out when u do the test that way there is equal resistance for each cylinder when doing the test.

Hmm..how exactly are you going about doing this? In ohterwords, describe what you are doing..maybe that will be easier..

is the engine even cranking, you probably disconnected the ASD relay and now the starter isnt even turning, you just want to stop fuel
ie fuel pump relay

There's two relays up on the firewall, I disconnected both of them. They're the ones that stop spark and fuel correct? There's a grey one and a black one. Those are the relays I disconnected. In Corbin's writeup there wasn't much clarity as to which ones were which or what they did. He just had that there's 2 or 4 relays (Looks like I only have 2) and that they need to be disconnected.

But yeah, nothing's cranking, nothing's happening.

so when u go to turn the car over to do the test its not trying to start?
the relays that u r talking about i disconected both of them when i did the test on mine so that should be right.

Yes, those are the correct relays. One controlls the ignition, and the other is for the fuel pump. Do you have power? Battery fully charged?

you know what, I hate to admit it, but I had the exact same problem the first time I attempted a compression test on my car. I even made a thread on it, much like this. No one could figure it out.

Until I held the clutch down while turning the key.

Make sure that you are pushing in the clutch.

I was too embarassed to reply to my thread with a conclusion. lol

LOL oh my fucking gosh. No, I was so nervous about the stupid numbers that I didn't even have the clutch in. Holy crap man points to you, that's probably exactly what it is. I win the noob of the year award on this one! Thanks guys, I'll make sure that's the problem when I get my new plugs in and try it again and I'll post the numbers.

I don't know yet. I'm waiting for my new plugs to arrive in the mail so I can do both. I'm pretty nervous though. If I get below 200 on any of them I'll probably be pissed. But then again the car does have 72k on it (mostly highway) so I'm not sure what to expect.

Hahah, happened to me too when I was trying to jump my friend's car... connected the cables, then went to turn on my car and WTF MY BATTERY'S DEAD TOO! So he comes over and says dood.. why are you pushing in the brake. Laf. Uhh... sharing time is over imo.
