6833, Exhaust piping

I currently got a 97 Eclipse GS thats in the making to be in the low 11's. I am currently planning everything out and I was wondering about the exhaust piping, I noticed that everyone has like 3" mandrel bent piping, does anyone know if there is room to run 4"? at least 3 1/4. I want to go as big as possible. I am not exactly a car genius I just like to race em haha. I got a custom shop that will do all the piping for me, i plan to get high flow cat's and magnaflow mufflers, i am gonna run dual exhuast (for looks) would it be best to split the pipe before the cat and have two or split the pipe after the cat? THing i could get away with doing two pipes and just putting on one cat? Emissions testing isn't a big thing up here, i guess the sound would be louder though... Any tips on what i should do to get the most HP possible for that super 20G turbo would be appreciated.

FOr the BEST flow, race pipe out the side with no cat or muffler. . . For streetable, get a 3 inch high flow muffler, 3 inch hi flow cat and a 3 inch downpipe and 3 inch piping.

A couple more questions, those of you with auto tranny's how do they shift? Are they pretty laggy or are they snippy? Can't be much worse than my 99 taurus SE haha. Also anyone with a Hahn Racecraft got an AEM cold air intake? Are they any downsides to grabbing a cold air intake over say a K&N Filter when using a massive turbo? The colder the air is better...

Do you have an AUTO in your car and wanting to make low 11's, interesting to say the least...

and to my knowledge cold air and turbo shouldn't go in the same sentence, i think turbo heats up the air very much so it's useless, you just need the best air filter there is, to flow as much air as possible.

Are you doubting autos ability to get into the 11 second range? Yet another reason Ray should have waited to do what he did.... Go race Joe or MWC.

Because we are the only country in the world that still uses the stupid english system.

There are exactly 25.4mm per inch.

60mm = 2.36"

80mm = 3.15"

My car is Standard, but my girlfriend wants an automatic talon and I am gonna do all the same stuff to her car as I am doing to my car. If the automatic shifted alright then i would probably use that one for bracket racing as it is easier to run the same times. But if the automatics ain't that good i might just buy her a standard unless its worth it to upgrade to a racing tranny. Any other comments on the cold air intake with a turbo? I have heard it both ways so I would like to know for sure.

60 mm would be OK for stage I, II. Anything higher, and I'd bet you'd want the 80 mm.

WOULD IT BE BAD TO RUN WITH THE 80MM WITHOUT A TURBO? WOULD I BE ANY SLOWER OR ANYTHING?

Bigger the exhaust=better even without turbos. The less restricted the air flow the more HP you get on any car engine.

Bigger is not always better.
depending on what mods you have in your car, and how much air you are sucking in and pushing out. I would stay away from anything bigger than 2.5" NA. yes going with 3" NA on street cams and stock compression WILL make you loose hella torque and maybe even HP. plus if you go with 3" NA, your car will be loud as hell (louder than if you were turbo)

Adel been there, done that.

Ported TB and Intake manifold ** ported and milled head ** PT rockers and lifters ** Crane Drag cams #16 ** Crane valve springs and retainers ** AEM cam gears ** Hotshots headers ** Greddy Cat back ** Iceman CAI ** S-AFC ** and the usual handling mods

and just use a testpipe(replaces cat). They can be made in 3 inch and if you ever need emissions checked, just slap your cat in for the inspection. I should have mine in a day or two. 3 inch test pipe with built in 2.5 inch resonator. You can get them any way you want just like BK. Very fair pricing.

you cant use a aem cai because it goes to the throttle body and if you go turbo you need one that goes to the turbo.

yes automatics shift quick and yes they are consistant in the 1/4. but its gonna take alot more to get one in the 11's than it would a stick. btw there is an automatic 200sx running that ran 8.12 @ 164.29 so it is possible to make an auto fast...its just alot harder

If you are planning stage II, go with 2.5" (60mm is OK if you must have Greddy). 3"+ is really best for cars pushing alot of air (over stage II). 2.5" will be OK for NA and great for turbo use. Bolt-on NA with 3"+ will suck on the low end. You'll lose alot of exhaust stream velocity and most scavenging effects.
