6814, Seems like this gas miliage sucks!!
Posted by XtremeRS, Nov-10-01 04:56 AM
Ok, it seems like my gas miliage is terrible, and a while ago i changed the front o2 sensor and still no difference. I got about 140 miles on half a tank, whith most being city driving, and a lil highway. I just changed the fuel filter last night also, but doubt it would have anything to do with it. I don't drive hard and usually shift at 3000 rpm, at most 4000 rpm. What do you guys think of this?? Damn i had a v6 Grand Prix befor this and got like 22 miles to the gallon! What are you guys gettin for miliage?? How many gallons is the gas tank?? 16? 14? thanks!!

IT may say 140 at the halfway mark, but you better look at how much gas you're putting back into your tank when filling up and looking at your corresponding trip odometer to get a better measure on your mileage. ( I get awesome mileage on trips ~28-30 hwy and "not so great" around town ~18-22--but I boost as well)

Our fuel tanks allegedly hold 16.9 gallons.(96+ and 15.9 in 95). Who know is that's true, but others here can confirm it. My tank looks damn empty at 13-13.5 gallons or so on the guage, but apprently there's plenty in reserve.

Yeah, when i filled up the needle was just a lil under the full mark, then i reset my trip od. I took the reading when the guage was just a lil under the halfway mark. I'm on stock 14's and stock size tires too, so the OD has to be fairly accurate, right?? I drove by one of those speed limit radar signs and the speed it said i was going was right on, with my speedometer so...Well lets say its 16 gal tank and i used 8 gals for 140 mi= 17.5 miles per gallon. Dat sucks ass!!! Anything wrong here??? anyone?????

Well, I may be wrong here, but the point I'm making is that although your gas gauge says 1/2 tank, I don't think you've expended 8 gallons of gas.

That's why I recommend you set your trip odometer, then travel a "half tank's" worth, then fill it back up. See how much fuel you added via the gas pump, and equate your mileage from the trip odometer.

But if you're getting 17.5 gallons in a tank, you might really be heavy on the throttle or there's something wrong with your car.

with spirited driving, i can get less than 20 miles per gallon. just highway brings the mileage up to around 25 mpg.

do what jason is sayin, and when u fill up, use your trip odometer, and divide the amount of gallons by the miles on your trip, but make sure to reset it when u fill up(after u calculate)

im usually at 23-26mpg when i put in more than 11 gallons

Yeah i know what you guys are sayin, and that was my next step, measuring with the gas pump, i guess i was just wondering how accurate our gas guages were, and what miliage everyone who is NA and 5 spd is gettin. I just thought it was pretty crappy, and i know our engines run rich, so i'll try that out and see what i get!! thanks fellas!

What mileage do you get on a full tank of gas? I can usually get to 300. Is this normal for the rest of you?

About the gas gauge reading more than what's in there, check this link.... http://www.geocities.com/CapeCanaveral/Cockpit/6144/DSM_Home/2G_Fix_It_Center/flakey_gas_guage.html
I did this on my car. It works well.

I was just gonna come on here and say the same thing.

My gas mileage is TERRIBLE.

I started following the recommended shift points for regular driving in the Eclipse Handbook, I think it's getting a little better.

Don't know, seems like a 2.0 liter could get a little better.

let me just add to the pile that i have noticed that gas milage for my car isnt that great, but thats because most of my driving is in the city and it will always be pretty bad in stop and go type traffic... its when i do the highway that she shows her style.. and ive gotten 30+ on the highway on a trip. I also have a tendency to drive in the high rpms too :-) so that is partly a culprit in my mpg.. also i think they might have been putting some stuff in gass that helps it become cheaper but has bad effects on mpg..

Our gas gauge is so messed up that if anyone thinks half their gas is gone when it says 1/2 full is a *&*%^^%. Jason said 16.9 gallons and I thought it was 16 and usually I will have the needle buried on "E" and only fill 14 gallons. Half full on the guage is like 5 gallons worth.

This is what ive noticed about our gas:
F
<----Good gas mileage
3/4
<----Bad gas mileage
1/2
<----Good gas mileage
1/4
<----Bad gas mileage
E

It seems to me that the first quarter of our tanks get very good gas mileage (e.g. 80-95 miles) Then the next quarter it gets horrible (e.g. 50-60 miles) Then it repeats. Has anyone else ever noticed this or am I all on my own?

I get bout 30-32mpg straight freeway driving and 25-27mpg city and freeway. I'd say check all your emission components especially your EGR. If your EGR is not working properly (as said in the factory manual) then you will get suck ass mileage. Clean out your EGR valve with some carb cleaner, escpecially the plunger. Check the all the vaccumm lines that go to the EGR transducer (the flying saucer that sticks off the block) and the one that goes to the manifold. Here's a good test to see if your EGR works. Rev your engine just a little bit while looking at your engine. Look at your EGR valve and see the plunger inside of it (the silver plunger in the center) It should move if you rev the engine a little. If that ain't it check for fuel leaks

Ok, i checked my egr valve, and it has vacum going to it, and the center diaphragm moves only like a few millimeters when i rev the engine. Is this working properly? I'm not sure how much its supposed to move, so anyone know??? I do have one of those mighty-vac thingies to put a vacum on things, so i will try that and see if the egr holds any vacum. I don't hear any vacum leaks and everything else seems fine. Anyone have any other ideas? I'm sure as hell not gettin 25-27 miles in the city/highway!

Hi all

I have a 98 eclipse GS. I get about 28-30 mpg. I drive mostly highway miles @ about 60-90mph. I have the following performance "mods"...

AEM Cold Air Intake
AF/X Underdrive Pulley
Borla Cat Back Exhaust
PaceSetter Hedders
Apex Short Shifter

Hope this helps in gauging your milage.

Sgt B.

PS Can anyone suggest a next good performance mod?

One time i got 38MPG can you beleive that! I stopped in Bonners Ferry Idaho and filled up. I knew a big hill was on the trip so I drove like a mad man, and when I got to the hill I just coasted down most of it. When I got to the bottom I filled up again (I had went about 50 miles) and after doing the math I got 38MPG. Now here is the kicker. I did the same for the UP part. Guess what? Yup I got about 20 MPG! Ha Ha . On average I would say that I get about 25-28mpg. I live in the city and drive like a fool on crack sooooooooooo.......

Our gauges are designed this way. Whoever posted the good/bad/good/bad is right about how it reacts. Soemthing to keep in mind is that when the light comes on you have about 2 gallons left still. I say fill the tank completely and then drive it until the light comes on to see how many miles you were able to put on. I have managed an extra 40 miles out of a tank driving on the light without running out. I by no means recommend doing this but I have done it just to see how far I could get. I was not willing to push my luck after that.

I have a 98 GS Spyder and routinely get about 25 in the city. My last highway trip of 300 miles was 34 MPG going no more than 70 MPH. I agree with the good, bad, good, bad guage function. I never let it go pass E. I've never put more than 13 gallons in the tank and my light has never come on. I don't even know if it works.
