67823, Noise from the passenger side wheel well (at idle)
Posted by WickedESi, Feb-03-04 06:47 PM
Ok, there is this deep sounding ticking coming from the passenger side wheel well when idling (no I'm not talking about lifter or injector ticking), it's the loudest when I listen to it from the hole in the bumper on that side. Is it the EVAP canister, or perhaps the A/C (even though it was off) compressor, or the power steering pump? Will unplugging the harness on the canister stop it from working and make the bad stuff go away? (btw, I have a brand new water pump, all new pullies, tensioner, belts, brackets, etc...)

I remember hearing this sound as well from the same area, though I could not pinpoint exactly what it was. Im stumped.

check your timing belt cover. sometimes the cam gears will grind up against the plastic a little and make this god awful noise.

Does the EVAP canister make any noise though? If not, at least that narrows it down. I will check though to make sure my AF-X pulley isn't rubbing.

on top of the many noises my car makes, you can hear the Evap Canister very well (behind passenger side headlight)

What would happen if I unplug the harness?

i'm not sure, you will probably get a CEL from doing it though

if it wasn't raining ice right now I'd go find out for you.

You know, I've had that same noise coming from the canister ever since I bought the car. I haven't messed with it though, because it hasn't been giving me any problems. My car is a 1995 RS. Maybe the noise just comes over time. Because I noticed most of us that have it are a little older('95/'96) than the rest of the other eclipse/talons.

I've got the same sound...haven't installed my UDP yet. I AM getting an Evap code. Would like to rectify this, any other ideas?

edit: could this be the water pump? Anyone with this noise, have you replaced your water pump recently?

I think this might be the timing belt tensioner pulley but not sure.
maybe even the harmonic dampener pulley.

I've gotten it too, have decided it has to be the evap canister.

what will happen if I just eliminate the evap canister besides the CEL I already have?

Just another CEL, according to SolarEclipse (that guy with the stripped down/roll-caged dsm)

Oh and you will not pass emissions.

ya that clicking pissed me off. Its the soleniod or what not on top of the canister. If you unplug it the sound will stop but you do get the CEL

I'm gonna guess that the solenoid is a dealer only part...correct?
