67689, Smoke Oil loss - Liftertap?

Well I have been getting ready for my turbo so I have done the following
,Compression check(210 210 210 210)..But I have been having a constant tappin /knocking sound from the valve cover(not too sure sounds like everyewhere actually)It gets worese and better its strange. I have a leak from somewhere around the tranny (my axle seal is leakin on the passenger side no bigie)it losses a half qrt a week .I have so far blocked EGR and gutted the cat .I found oil in the pcv and the breather tube to the intake so I replaced the pcv Ever since I gutted the cat I can see and smell oil burning out the exhaust.when I first crank and after I get on it and come to nearly stoped it puffs some out but I dont see it when I get on it its whitish blue smoke and I can smell the oil. Im wondering if the oil thats in the intake is burning and causeing the smaoke and it the oil is getting in the intake where from (valve guide seals leaking and pushing it up into the intake?)and could the oil in the intake be giving me false readings on the compression? Im at a loss anybody got any ideas? Sorry for the jumpy topics my minds a mess from thinking about all the stuff thats wrong. Also my oil pres in 40psi at start 100 when Im on it b4 it warms up the 25-30 at idle after its warm and 60-65 when im on it.

Could this be the headgasket leaking on the block and in the cyl? Does anybody know ? Why is it that it that nobody can reply to my post but anybody else gets a response in a couple of hours?:wary

I had the same problem a little while ago. Most likely one of your valve gaskets around where your spark plugs go isn't in place. It makes oil go into your spark plugs thus causing you to burn oil. It is very simple to do if that is the problem. Go to any autoshop and buy the valve gasket set with the special cream to be able to stick it one there.

EDIT: oh yea you might want to change your spark plugs too after you do that.

aaahhhh!!! many subjects all at once!!! good thing i can read schytsophrenic (J/K :) )

the 420A naturally looses oil for no aparant reason... I have a 95, so i'm leaking out the back of my head (yep, good ole #4).

I also have the noise that comes from EVERYWHERE! leaky trans too (except i can deal with this leak because i'm the one that replaced those damn axle seals)

I'd also like to figure out the noise and smoke problem (My car is about to undergo a name change from Evil Betty a.k.a. Master Pain to 'ole smokey)

but I wouldn't be too concerned with those compression numbers, they seem might impressive. hell, i'd be lucky if i got half of what you have (still havn't checked). and I think that the oil getting into your cylinders would be negligable in your compression test.

but don't quote me on that.... If it were me i'd wait till Dino, Micheal97Rs, XtremePsi?, DR1665, HadesOmega or CORBIN said... (i trust them more than me)

I just relpaced my valve cover gasket, there was oil in #4 around the plug wire. There is oil from the corner of the head under the gasket so Im guessing that its a posiable headgasket leakin, but the oil burnig is kinda bothering me Im fixing to put on a strait T3 on my old star setup and boost 6-7psi Im wondering if I should just say screw it and wait till I pop some ring landins and rebuild all at once? Could the noise be from lifters and fixed by the PT lifters? Thanks for the reply
Oh and my plugs are kinda on the grey chalky white side :wary

chalky white, grey, light brownish plugs = A. O. K.

you suffer from the leaky #4 also from the pos factory HG

Have you pulled out and ground down that back, driver's side head bolt? There is an issue with the head in that hole. Something about it's not tapped right and the bolts can't torque properly. Chances are, if the HG is blown there, doing this won't help it, but at least you have something to try and feel like you did something about it. :P

I have a similar problem myself. If I let Daisy idle too long (say 5 minutes), she will begin to smoke from the tail pipe. I'm guessing it's valve seals in my situation since she doesn't smoke any other times. At idle, there may not be enough vacuum or something like that to get the seals to, well, seal and so the oil slips past. Dunno. I know my rings are probably leaking too, but some Total Seals will solve that problem either way.

I'm no expert on any of this, but I figured I'd say my two bits since I was mentioned and I've been watching this thread for the past couple days. :P

Good luck!

So the oil burnig and leakin down the back of the block is both the head gasket? It smokes when it idles (after it warms up) and after you get on it and come to a stop and let the car die down. You think that is the head gasket or the valve guide seals?

Well it could be both or even your rings. Really no way to tell unless you try to replace the valve gaskets and then the head gasket then try it out. Of course this should be common knowledge but if you do replace the head gasket make sure its a MLS gasket. If that doesn't work then it would definately be your rings.

if your car has got some miles on it i'd bet on the valve seals. the oil is probably leaking down into the exhaust ports

Could be valve guides too.

I got the sonic if you got the boom.

Well just for shits and giggles I took off my pcv hose off the valve cover and pulled the breather tube off the intake and took the car out for a spin.I rang it out 1rst and 2nd on my parkway....no smoke at stop..then I hit the highway wound it out to end of 3rd...stoped no smoke. I let it sit in waly world parkin lot... no smoke and I reved it up and just a lil black smoke came out and smells like gas a lil.(btw I have gutted the cat).I donno maybe Im imagineing things and it will smoke in the morning.Any thoughts on why no smoke?

Ok about the headgasket leaking,If I used arp head studs would that fix the "blot shaving" thing your suppose to do?

Well I redid a compression test(210 all the way cross)...Oil in #4 sparkplug and I just replaced the valve cover gasket so It aint coming from there. So I guess the headgasket is leaking in the cyl snd out on the block. Anybody think anything diferent? Is this possiable? And will Arp head studs fix this problem along with a new head gasket?

well if you decide to change the h.g check the block but exspecially the head for warpage or it will just blow again.
