Because my old one ceased to function correctly. Thusly causing my battery to fail to operate correctly and also fail.

I replaced both about a year ago.

i just replaced mine about a month ago. it died on me and it was putting out no power. i had about 99000 miles before it even started to show sign of wear. and its very easy to do, don't pay to have it done. 4 hour max (once you figure out what your looking at in the chiltons manual) :-)

I don't know if this is true on our cars, but for the 4g63, it seems that once you replace your factory alternator, you will be replacing it every 6 months to a year. No matter what kind of alternator you replace it with, it seems to fail much sooner than the original one. At least that's what the socal dsm guys are experiencing...

I'm gettin ready to do my 60k service, and i prob will do it since i got everything apart. It doesnt really look to hard, but you have to get under the car to get at it. One bolt you have to get at from the top of the car, and the other at the bottom, and has to pull it out at under the car. If its workin ok now, and you are having the timimg belt done by someone else, i wouldn't worry too much about it for now. I got quoted of about 240 bucks for a new one, so they aren't cheap(that was at autozone too). Take a volt meter and check your voltages. Car off and no elect drain, it should be atleast 12.4 volts for a good batt. Car running and at idle at least 13.4 volts, and full load above idle, at least 13.4 volts....If its lower than these,it might be gettin weak, so i would change it...
