67176, HELP!!! fluid going through the exhaust system!!!
Posted by taloniized, Jan-22-04 10:54 AM
i was just troubleshooting my car to see what was causing my overheating and it looks like that fluid (i think coolant) is running through my exhaust manifold and through the exhaust system. is that the headgasket? just finished a rebuild last november.

is your car smoking? it u got a blown h.g the smoke would smell very sweet almost like pancakes but its a strong very noticable smell, and is there any oil in ur coolant or coolant in ur oil? check that out too also if there is any coolant consumption.
could just be alot of moisture in the system.

my gsx has fluid that comes out the exhaust, most cars do. it is called condensation. especially in cold weather.

but not excessive....you need to check for oil in coolant and vice versa.

If you have a compression tester, do a quick test on all cylinders to see if they are within spec. If it is the headgasket and since you mention you did a rebuild not too long ago, it could just be a simple as the head bolts having become untorqued. I had the same problem and found out the hard way with mine. Had blown-headgasket related symptoms and ended up tearing the engine down to the head only to discover the headgasket was in perfect condition!! Tediously put everything back together with NEW head bolts, and torqued them back to spec and everything was fine again......

i'm very sure that i replaced them during the rebuild, but i can't be 100% positive.

The outside of your downpipe is steaming? Or is a coating or oil burning off of it? If you have coolant in your exhaust it shouldn't cause the downpipe itself to steam. The coolant wouldn't come through the downpipe, unless it is finding a way to leak through the flex section. If you have coolant in your exhaust it will destroy your exhaust system. It will rust from the inside out, and I am not sure how bad it would hurt your turbo. It may still be in enough of a vapor form at that point to not hurt much. Everyone elses input would be helpful there.

nevermind everyone. thanks for all the input. it was the radiator cap. when my coolant hose slipped off when i was driving, a lot of coolant got sprayed in my engine bay which then soaked my exhaust wrap on my downpipe and that was what caused it to steam for a long time. i idled it for 25 minutes straight to dry up the exhaust wrap and now there's no steam. Thanks 2GNT!!!
