66674, Belt tensioner subsitute? Posted by mrj82, Jan-15-04 02:59 PM
Hey as I was putting on my new underdrive pulley, which fit fine, no problems there. My stupid belt tensioner bolt broke, again. Do any of you know if there is a newer/better design for it? Something maybe off of another engine that isn't so poorly designed? And if there isn't how much a new one? I haven't got to check on it yet, the dealership is closed for the night.

how about just removing a/c and belt tensioner and using the adjustabilty of the p/s pump to remove tension. Or removing it too and not needing that belt at all?

So this would mean no more AC if you did this. I'm thinking so, but I always get those damn belts swapped in my mind. If it does, there goes that idea. :P

Remove the tensioner assembly completely, and buy a smaller belt. If you need to tighten it, do it through the power steering pump tensioner bracket.

That sounds like it would work, have you done this? Is it any harder then using the stupid tensioner? I don't really feel like paying $140 for a new bracket just for a fucking bolt.

Yeah I've done it. Its a lot easier than you'd think. Just get a tape measure to tell you what new length of belt you need.

Are you loosening the back nut before you start turning on the bolt?

I sure did, its just that its the second one I put on there. I got it off of an old 420a a friend of mine has. The bolt was a little warped so it striped the threads like the first one. Anyway since I'm at work right now, after looking at the power steering pump's bracket I think that will work. As soon as we are done with this video install I might get a chance to fix it, just gotta get another belt. Thanks for your help guys, you wouldn't believe how furstrated I was after breaking that piece of shit. I didn't even think about doing this way. Hopefully my Mp 60mm throttle body will come in today like they told me. I should certainly see some gains with it and the udp on there.

Well I got a new belt, I forgot the number but its 47" in length. Anyway I used the power steering pump for adjustment and everything works fine. Yes it is a hell of alot easier the using the stupid tensioner. Everything is cool, got my underdrive pulley on no problem now I just gotta put on my new mp 60mm throttle body I just got. For once things are looking up for my car. Thanks for all your help guys.

^^^so you used a 47" belt to eliminate the tensioner right? you wouldnt BELIVE how usefull that may be to people here. 2gnts are notorious for thier tensioner problems, lol. points to you.

I was the first to do this setup, shouldn't I get the points. Search the old posts almost a year ago.

ahemm....
well, actually i did the same thing more than a year ago, but i could never remember the actual belt length. ive researched this topic (and everything related to the ac/ps system) for a while over the past 6-8 months and never came about your topic. its not saying anything bad about you, so dont take me giving someone else points as an insult.:nono

Can you only get this bracket from Mitsu and do you know the part number?
Thanks, antgriff

Can you please tell me where you bought this belt at? What's the part number? Cuz' it's time for my belt to be replace... Thanks...

just tell the parts store you need a 5-ribbed belt 47" in length. they can look up the part number there and give you options on what kind of belts they have.

I bought it at Napa auto parts. I think the number is K50470 I could be wrong, can't check right now cuz the package is at home and I'm at work. But just tell them 5 rib 47" and it fits perfect. Plus you can get a hell of alot more tension on it. It took me about an hour to using the stupid tensioner to adjust tension on the belt before, now it took me like 5 minutes to put the belt on, adjust tension, and tighten everything down. It is sooooo much easier this way. I got my new throttle body on too, and fixed a small fuel leak at the fuel rail, the shreader valve was leaking so I put a new one in. Everything is cool and I like the new throttle body. Nice little gain of power for the pulley and throttle body. I'm happy cuz I can drive my car again.

Oh yeah btw, that belt size is for an underdrive pulley, so if you need one for a stock pulley, measure the distance around the pulleys first so you don't get the wrong one.

top fuel pulley? obx pulley?
is it 20% underdriven or 30%

66942, RE: Belt tensioner subsitute? Posted by mrj82, Jan-19-04 01:03 PM
I believe it is a Cosmo Racing pulley, 1.12lbs., 20% underdrive. I could be wrong on the underdrive part but it didn't make much of a difference on my charing system. I have a hell of a system in my car and my headlights still don't dim with it so can't be a big difference.

How hard is it to put that pulley in? Got a write up for it? Thanks...

67047, Underdrive pulley install, writeup Posted by mrj82, Jan-20-04 05:02 PM
Its not real hard bro. You will need a special pulley puller, it cost about $120 or so with tax from snap on. Part number on the pulley puller is #97400B. I guess I could do a quick write up but I wouldn't have any pictures to go along with it cuz I was doing this at work and I didn't think about it. It might be a good idea to make this a sticky topic or put it in the things we seen before section or how to's? I don't know. More or less here is what you do:
1. Jack up the car and secure it on jackstands. 2. Remove the wheel and inspection cover/wheel well thingy. 3. Take off the power steering belt and alternator belt. 4. unbolt the pulley, you will need to stick a big screwdriver or a 3/8" drive extension (I found it to work the best) on there to keep it from moving, be careful when doing this not to break the timing cover like I did. 5. Remove the pulley with the pulley puller, make sure you use the right one or its not coming off. 6. I thought it would help to spray some WD-40 on the crank to help it go on there easier, of course wipe it off first. After spraying it, the pulley went on easy and snug. 7. Put your bolt back in and make sure you start it by hand so you don't strip threads or anything. 8. Put whatever you used to keep the pulley from moving when removing the bolt back in there to keep it still while you torque it down to 105 ft./lbs. 9. Put your new alternator belt back on, then the power steering belt. 10. Adjust your tension on your belts 11. Put on your wheel, torque down the lug nuts, take the car off the jack stands and drive! All done.
Tips: Make sure you have all the tools and parts to do the job before starting this and a good place to work on it. Take your time and do things right. If your belts are not the right size, take some string, run across all your pulleys and measure it, tell your parts guy the length of belt you need. The manufacturer should tell you what size belts to use but sometimes they give you the wrong info. If the pulley tensioner bolt breaks like mine did, just remove it and use the power steering pump as your tensioner, make sure your power steering pump is adjusted all the out and use your string and measure for the size of belt your gonna need.
Special Tools needed: floor jack and jack stands is a must. 1/2" drive torque wrench 1/2" driver breaker bar #97400B pulley puller Basic hand tools
