66586, Where can you get a '96-'99 style ignition coil harness? Posted by WickedESi, Jan-14-04 08:13 PM
I ordered a screamin deamon ignition coil from howell, and I'm a '95, and it comes with a flat pin style connector ('96-'99). Where can I get a flat pin style harness, there arn't any junkyards local to me. Can these be purchased from the dealership? Do they have to be crimped on, or do they have wire leads?

From a 97 - 04 Neon, from a 01- 04 PT Cruiser, from a 02-04 Mini Cooper, from a Stratus, Breeze 97-On, from an Avenger 97-99. All of those use that plug.

:shrug There's no junk yard near by me, and I doubt someone would let me clip off their ignition coil harness :P

You can get an adapter from a dealer, but I don't have the part number anymore. Check MSD's website, I found the part number off of a package of a coil for our cars. I don't have the package anymore though, I had to send it back to Jeg's.

I got this reply to my email,
Dear Sir;
We do not make a harness like that. You would need to purchase the appropriate coil for your application.You need to disconnect the connection going to the coil and look inside to see which type of pins the coil has.............round pins MSD P/N 8229, flat pins MSD P/N 8239.
Thank You, MSD Tech
I take it that they didn't understand (even though I wrote it clearly) that the harness adapater I mentioned to them was an OEM product. They did not know what I was talking about.

Well, I went to the closet junk yard, had to drive to Tennessee. They didn't have any dsms but they had a stratus, so I cut the harness off that. They charged me $10 for it x( . I soldered it on tonight, and put my new crane 8.5mm wires and 1 step hotter NGK plugs gapped to .065 (along w/ JWoodley's ground kit).
And WOW...
My car pulls hard and very smooth through the whooole rpm range now, reving from 6000 to 7200 rpm is as smooth as going from 1000 to 2000 rpm. Also the note of my exhaust is deeper (no it's not my imagination), but I think the wider plug gab contributed to that (bigger flame kernel, more burnt fuel).
All I gotta say is, take a multimeter and test your coil/wires (resistance rating is in the Chilton's manual) and if they are bad, get the screamin deamon and crane wires package deal from howell.

glad to hear you found one! :thumbsup
for anyone else looking, don't bother with the dealer or any traditional parts places. the coil pack harness is part of the ENTIRE engine bay wiring harness which connects to all the sensors and the ECU ine the ENTIRE ENGINE BAY. it'll run ya over $1k from the dealer. i asked and explained but they do not sell harnesses individually. you gotta snip them yourself off of a junked car.
