For my next eclipse, should i buy standard? i dont know how to drive it yet, but i think if i buy a short shifter it wont be that hard to learn. so, should i go w/ standard? also, is a short shifter a do it at home qucik install, or a more labor intensive one?

it all depends on you mang.
i bought standard/stick cuz i wanted to be able to "drive" the car around turns and what not. i also knew that auto sucks up a little power, and the standard was cheaper.

you dont need a shortshifter to learn how to drive stick. just be patient, and if you stall, you stall. it took me a good 2-3000miles to get used to the clutch. once you can start in second from a dead stop i think you understand how to drive a stick.

its your choice. i myself have heard a few arguments about this topic, so i hope i didnt just start one.

took me about 3 days to get it down to where i wouldnt stall coming out of first, the hardest part is finding the sweet spot where the car will roll with just easing out the clutch and no gas, once you find that point, and you figure out how much pressure to apply to the gas, i also learned on a 1986 mazda pickup out in acres of fields, so it was fun

Not many people put any $ into their autos...Clutches etc... But yeah I didnt like the auto very much.

my car has the easiest clutch ive ever used... took me no getting used to it.. and it was my first car that was stick.. i just learned on a pickup before i got my car

LOL, Niclipse you alright dawg ;). I would say definitely go with a manual tranny. It only took me a day or two to learn. The hardest part is starting out in first, once you have that down its easy. I learned on my moms 94 Eclipse GT (GAWD I LOVE THAT THANGS TORQUE) after I stayed with my dad one summer (i lied to her and told her my dad had taught me over the summer) I was burning out all over the place until I got it down, but I think it is worth the trouble.

Definately worth the 2-3 days that it took me to learn. In the beginning you will most likely stall but dont let that get to you. Just let the clutch out slow and give it gas to no more than 2K rpms when releasing the clutch. Hope this helps.

I bought my car without knowing how to drive it! I didn't know how to drive stick, but I learned real quick. I used to own an '88 300zx turbo, but it was auto :-( after that I said no more automatics!

most people on here with auto's are gonna say "auto isnt that bad" im not one of them. its the 1 thing i hate most about my car. if i had a choice there is no way i would get an auto. its a handicap. not to say you cant have fun in an auto or that you cant make an auto fast, but with a stick you have so much more control over the car.

ok, i think i am convinced to by stick. i was almost sure before, but when my uncle said he was sellin his 2000 vette 6spd cause he was sick of traffic with it, it made me doubt myself. but one of my fathers pickups is standard, so i guess ill practice on that a bit before i get mine. thanks.

Yeah dude, don't buy AT. I made that mistake, not ONCE but TWICE. NEVER AGAIN! Thinkin about swappin over the winter if I can find a complete set-up cheap enough. If anyone on here has done it let me know. I know it's been done, I just gotta find one of those peeps.

how hard or aggrivating is it to drive in heavy traffic with it? cause thats the ONLY drawback i have ever heard.
