66206, Safc tuning question Posted by New..b, Jan-09-04 10:25 AM
I just finished reading gtuned.com safc tuning thing. It seems easier than everyone says it is. Is the way he shows u to tune correct? If its like that then i will just get an safc and a digi a/f guage and be set. Any suggestions on tuning it. I searched and found some but now what i was looking for. Aslo Any problems when tuning the Safc. TIA

what exactly are you tuning it for? bigger injectors? idle? leaning out stock engine?

There's really no "formula" for tuning the S-AFC. It's been a while since I had one, but since you're tuning for bigger injectors, more than likely, you'll be trimming fuel across the rpm ranges. Just be patient and watch the a/f and egt, and trim a couple of % at a time. Most cars have different setups, so you should not try to duplicate anyone's fuel trimmings, unless the two cars have nearly identical mods.

hey fly what size inj. u usin? I have barely any idea how to tune. To tune the safc for bigger ones all u do is adjust rpms to around 88-94v right? Thats how i fugure it. If im wrong tell me. fly why did u get eid of it?

I got rid of the S-AFC because I wanted a lot more horsepower (I had 370cc injectors at that time & boosting ~10psi), and to build major horsepower, I needed bigger injectors and something to controller them. I currently have an Accel DFI Gen VI piggyback fuel controller and 625cc injectors. This year, my goal is 400 fwhp, which I will dyno tune for after I replace my clutch.
So, to answer your question about setting the AFC via air/fuel readings, yes, you try to achieve an a/f reading between .89-92V. What's your targeted horsepower with the current setup? What size injectors do you have or will buy? HRC has nice injector selections that will work well with our cars. Check them out. The S-AFC should be be able to adequately control up to 500cc injectors.

my goal is about 300whp. I will buy some 30lb injectors probobly. Maybe 40lbs.

30lb injectors wont be enough to get you to 300whp. to get 300whp, you will need to boost between 15-20psi. 390cc injectors would be the very minimum.

Yeah, I'd say 415cc's or 500cc's. That way you're not working the injectors to its max output. The S-AFC should be able to control the 500cc's just fine.

I thought i heard somewhere that the safc hurts timing of something. Is this true? just wondering

The SAFC makes adjustments to your MAP sensor voltage. When you lean the AFC out too far (I don't know what TOO FAR is), the stock ECU will try to compensate for (so and so, and whatever) by advancing timing. Too much timing advance is bad. Once again, correct me if i'm wrong, but the best way to remedy this is to buy an ignition control unit like the MSD DIS-2 and retard the timing. By doing this, you can adequately tune the motor.

The best tool to tune with is a wideband o2.

couldnt u tune a with a digital a/f guage also? Like that jumptronix thing instead? Dyno places cost mucho dinero

Yeah, you can tune using your o2 sensor, just won't be quite as accurate. If you're not picky about tuning, it isn't a big deal.

Well, the car's down right now with a fuel pump dispute issue (idk what to do!) When I ran that time, i was using 30lb injectors (310cc), 12:1 Craptech FPR. My AFC was tuned linear ending on a +9% @ 7000rpm, and I was running approximately 13psi. I ran again in October with basically the same setup, with worse track conditions and managed a 14.1 @ 109! People were blown away with a 109mph trap speed. I was too, i was not expecting it.
Things will be a bit different in spring, i'll be going down to a 4:1 regulator with 420cc injectors that are sitting here beside me. I also look to get some actual decent tuning done on my friend's wideband, and buying a DIS-2. Plan to run 17-19psi.

Should be better than that, but our track sucks.
