65277, Question on all motor build. Posted by SlowEsi, Dec-24-03 10:52 PM
Im looking into starting an all motor build soon so i had a few questions for those who have done it before. Im looking at getting the howell long rod bottom end kit with 12.5 compression, crane #10's, AFX ecu, crank scraper,AFX underdrive pulley, SAFC and i already have CAI, header, exhaust. Then some dyno tuning. Does anyone have any guesses at approx crank hp? Has anyone had any trouble with the howell bottom end kit's or AFX ecu's etc? Any other engine parts you might suggest? And i decided to go with All motor over a turbo(oviously not for the costs..) because i need a very reliable engine and id get to many tickets if i had a turbo;) TIA

first of all, SEARCH, theres way too many open topics on this
secondly, crane 10's are too small for almost any application. with 12.5:1 compression you should run at least a crane #16-22. youll need new valvesprings, valves(stainless) and rockers and lifters.

12.5CR is going to be very difficult to street without a LOT of tuning. Keep this in mind, the lower the CR, the easier it will be to tune the car. The higher the CR, the closer you will be to detonation, so you will have to keep a more vigilant eye on the engine to prevent damage. The gerenal consensus is that 10.5 is no problems (I've had mine for about 8k miles now and it's cake), 11.5 is going to be very tasty, but isn't really done, and that 12.5, while certainly not impossible, will be more work to keep tame an streetable. If you plan on putting the car to the track, 12.5 is the way to go, but if you don't want a monster (or a bitch) to tune to drive to work everyday, consider 10.5 or 11.5 CR.
Glad to hear another person is into the all-motor route! :thumbsup AFX ECUs are only for the 97s, but the people who've used them say they are great. I will have one here pretty soon myself.
You may want to search around and hear what people are syaing about cams as well. A lot of the people who get the 10s feel like they could've gone with teh 12s, and the people with the 12s think they could tolerate the 16s. I will be getting the 18s, or Crower 3s.
As far as how much hp to expect, I suggest you search the performance engine forum for "diabolical." I posted about my diabolocal all motor plans and there is a list in there of what I have and will be running. If anyone is going to be close to seeing 230hp at the crank, without a stand alone or quad throttle bodies, it's going to be me, but 230hp is a very optimistic estimate on my part. Just a target to shoot for.
Welcome!

I think ill drop the CR 11.5 then, i just want a pretty quick car that has a reliable/bulletproof engine(hard to do with dsm's i know). I am a 97 btw:) I think ill just get the bottom end kit and the ECU, get the car running then maybe take off the head and change cams etc. when i have more money/time. Thanks for the advice
:thumbsup
Ps: I showed everyone that motherland thing, had everyone rollin:) PPS: who makes 11.5 CR pistons? I dont see any at Howellautomotive, i was looking at there long rod kits.....

RE: Ps: The end is nigh... RE: PPs: drop Motofool a PM. He can get you the rebuild kit too. He's a good guy who will shoot you straight. :thumbsup

Watch the timing advance of the AFX ECU with the higher compression, 11.5:1 could really be pushign detonation, 12.5:1 you will deffinately need to pull some of the AFX ECU's timing advance out to run.
An ignition amp with timing control should be added to your mods list.
