65098, HELP!!! I am having problems and I am not sure what it is.
Posted by Ozzmosis86, Dec-21-03 05:06 PM
When driving my car and the engine is running low rpms (less than 2500 to 3000) and under near full throttle, the engine will begin to sputter. If I do not take my foot off of it, there will be a clunking sound coming from the engine bay on the driver's side. Everything except the clunking would point to fuel filter, or some part of the fuel system. The clunking could just be the engine sputtering very badly, but it doesn't seem like it. It also seems to be worse when the car is cold. After it warms up it isn't as bad. I am really not sure, and I need some advice. It has me worried. If anyone has seen or heard this before and has some advice for me please let me know, or just give me your opinions.

Thanks in advance,

Andy

Yea, change the plugs and wires and see if that helps. Two summers ago I changed my plugs and somehow gapped them wrong and my car ran like yours. I also got a multiple cylinder misfire CEL.

Well, I bought the car in the beginning of October, and I have been thinking about putting new plugs and wires on it, but with school I haven't had the time. That was another problem that I thought may be occuring. However, what would the loud clunking sound be? It feels like it is under my feet while driving, like around the transmission. It doesn't make sense that it would have anything to do with the tranny though.

Plugs and wires take 10 minutes to change. What kind of clunking sound is it and how often does it make the sound?

Sounds like a metal to metal clanking almost. It only makes the sound if I do not let off of the throttle when it starts to hesitate and sputter. Normally I downshift and bring the engine speed up and it all goes away. Plugs and wires will be changed tomorrow, probably the fuel filter as well. Hopefully it will all go away. I started to think about it and the rear engine mount may not be tight enough. Last week, I had it loose, and I thought I got it completely tight. I may not have tightened it enough. I will try to tighten it up, but it is a pita while the tranny is in there.

That could make a clunk, but it's not going to make your engine bog, unless it's pinching the fuel line. heh.

is it knocking/pinging, its that what your hearing.

I bet you have a check engine light on, and you need to get that read (autozone does it for free).

Are you saying your car wont rev over 3000 rpms at all??

Are you Auto or stick?
Could be an internal tranny problem.

No CEL, it isn't knock or ping. The car will rev over 3000 rpms, but the coughing only occurs below that. I am a manual transmission.

I replaced the plugs and wires tonight and it doesn't do it anymore. The only problem is that I couldn't get it to do it on the way home from the parts store, so I don't know if it actually fixed it. I noticed that one of the connectors on the coil pack was rusted. I am going to replace the coil tomorrow, the parts store is already closed. I have a fuel filter, but I am going to wait awhile to put it in. I would like to see if this fixes the problem before installing it.

sounds like u have a slight misfire and the popping u hear is like almost like abackfire out of the intake which sounds like a metal to metal poping kind of noise, check plugs, wires then coil always start with the least expensive thing

"I noticed that one of the connectors on the coil pack was rusted"

rust=contact with oxygen=not fully secured to the plug wire. sounds like someone (at some point) had jammed the wire on so that it was partially bent and wasnt making full contact w/ the coil. even if this isnt causing your problem, its somthing that would have eventually caused one. you might be able to lightly rub it w/ a light grit sandpaper and take the rust off. :thumbsup
