My custom dual exhaust is pretty deep and loud. It also has a loud highway drone. My brother told me to lose the two 4.5" polished tips and to goto Autozone and buy two 3.25" resonated tips. So I looked at them and they said they were fiberglass packed. So my question is wouldn't they stop resonating the tone after a couple years or less, just like a glasspack?

By the way here is my exhaust setup:
OBX 4-1 Header
Catco 2.5" High Flow Cat
OBX 10" resonator
Flowmaster Delta Flow 40 Series - Dual Outlet
Two 4.5" Polished Tips
All of it is on 2.5" Mandrel Bent Piping

By the way the tips are clamp on and they cost $10 a peice. Is that a good deal for $20?

I have Ractive resonated tips that are probably about 2 years old.

They're really dirty inside, so I'm sure they're not working like they used to. They do change the exhaust note though. At WOT the exhaust sounds like a raspy hissing noise... rather than the BWAAAAA of a large open-tip 4-5".

The tips (dual 3") are for my stock/sleeper look, not for performance or sound.

So do the resonated tips make the exhaust sound worse?

Worse is a matter of taste. It sounds different is all. Quieter and less obvious.

Sounds a bit like a high-hp BMW... you know the car is putting down power, but doesn't scream like a honda. :shrug

You said it's $20? What are you worried about?

True, its only $20. Now I just have to sell my old ones. Know anyone who wants two 4.5" round polished tips?

how does your exhaust sound. When you idle does it kinda sound like a 8v? and is there that anoying rasping sound when you floor it?

My car doesn't sound like a V8. It sounds more like a Ferrari!:)
Theres is no raspiness. I just want it a tad quieter. I'm hoping this tips I'm getting are going to do the job. Do you want to buy my old ones?

I got one of those Autozone tips, mostly cause it filled the muffler cut out on the bumper better than stock (unless you have a GST muffler). My car idles at a lower tone, which is kinda suprising since i didn't alter my stock muffler and it bolts on on top of it, just like a cosmetic sleeve or something. I'm not too sure about the quality though. I've had it for 3 months and the inside of the resonator is starting to rust and peel away, mostly due to the excess fuel. That means my car is running rich right?

That is water thats being held in the tip, because I bet you slipped the tip over the stock one. You should have cut about 4 inches off the stock tip and then bolted it on. That way water isn't held in the tip. The stock tip will drip water into your new tip. Is your tip a resonated one?

sorry about the hijack...but can you cut out the resonators in your muffler?

I believe that the stock muffler is a sound canceling type which uses barriers to create standing waves that cancels out the sound wave. There is a resonater right after the cat that you can remove and replace with a straight pipe.

It would make it louder, but it would also be raspy without the resonator. I wouldn't do it.

i was speaking of my aftermarket muffler. it is raspy as hell but i love the way it looks. that is the only thing giving me that raspy ass sound...just want it to go away. The muffler is loud as hell, i mean louder than magnaflow's or anything else i have heard.

If you pull out the resonator and all the packing it will just be a straight pipe and wil be loud as hell.

Well, I decided to get Pilot Exhaust Tips and have them welded on. They are the Hummer polished stainless steel series, which have built in fiberglass resonators. They are a 3.5" tip. I hope they sound good. Does anyone have these on their car? Or have even heard of these?:shrug

I have the round resonated one, the first 1 in that pic. I am thinking about cutting the tip off the stock 1, just like you said, but the only real reason I got it is for cosmetic reasons. BTW, if I were going to cut the tip off, what tool should i use?

Cutoff the stock tips about 4 inches with a saw, with a good blade. Its not that hard. But I'd get the tip welded on, so there won't be any exhaust leaks around the three bolts. If you get the tip welded on, the shop will cut off the old tip for free.
Now the water won't drip out into the tip. It will be dripping onto the ground. Also, it might sound a little better.
