63988, Engine temp is fine around town, but on highway it drops to COLD. Posted by djtrickee, Dec-01-03 10:05 AM
I just noticed this problem the other day when returning home from thanksgiving. I was cruising on the highway around 85-90ish and my temp slowly fell to near the cold mark and stayed there the entire drive home. Now whenever I drive around town in traffic and stop and go at lights etc, my temp always climbs and stays exactly where it is supposed to.
Do you guys think my thermostat is going bad? I had a leaky radiator cap this summer and replaced it with the GST one. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

PS- would a faulty thermostat have anything to do with my funky idle?

by funky idle do you mean high like when the car is cold?
i had the same problem and what it was was that the thermostat was broken. almost in 2 pieces.
i'd say replace that.. i'm not sure if the cap would cause that or not. but the GST or GSX cap has a different pressure rating on it.

Yup, the temperature dropping is your thermostat. My bet is that its broke into pieces, it happens.

Thanks for the replies guys. I figured it was the thermostat, but it didnt make sense that my temps would be fine around town, but highway driving would drop my temp so low.
And by funky idle i mean that for the 1st 2 minutes or so after I start the car it idles real erratic, tries to stall, catches itself, revs up and then repeats teh whole process again. It only lasts for a few minutes then it will idle fine until I turn it off again, then the whole process starts over.

What Thermostat did you end up using? I know u have the fluidyne, so during cold weather, thats gotta attribute for something (i have it too). After the overheating problem i had in the summmer, it takes forever for my car to warm up now since I fixed my fans :rolleyes
