63844, REAR MAIN SEAL Problem Posted by xEclipsE RaceRx, Nov-28-03 09:03 PM
Well after rebuilding my engine I have abig leak by my rear main seal area. I let a mechanic look at it and he said we put the seal in backwards. He bought a new one and put it in right, but it still leaks, but not as bad as it did. He asked if I had the crank machined on the side where it connects to the fly. He said that I might need like a sleeve that goes there betwwen the fly and the real main seal. Does anyone know what he is talkin about or what to do? Ive been without my car for almost 3 months now...its sucks

You need to be sure that the face of the seal is flush with the metal of the block, and not pushed in too far. Also, a small dab of black RTV should be used where the bedplate meets the block, so no oil can get out from there. Other than that, that is all that is needed for the rear main to seal. You may want to check the oil gallery freeze plug, its behind that metal flashing piece, behind the flexplate, and are known to leak.

Did you rebuild your engine? Or was this just a simple rear main replacement? If your mechanic put in this seal and it leaks, he didn't do his job, take it back until he gets it right or get your money back.
Maybe you left out the pink o-ring in the bedplate? Did you use Loctite 518 to seal the bedplate and block? If the rear main is installed correctly, flush with the block, and with the flat side facing out, there's really no way it can leak.
The only thing I can think of that sounds like this "sleeve" is a small shim between the crank and the flywheel. Has nothing to do with the sealing though.
