if i use synthetic oil, do i have to use a different kind of oil filter?

No. A standard oil filter will serve fine. It is worth changing to synthetic oil for sure though.

I heard somewhere that you shouldn't use synthetic during the break in period and on cars with really hi miles. Is the second part true, I have around 109k?

Synthetic tends to flow better, as well as remove the crud conventional oil leaves behind. High milage vehicles tend to have worm gaskets. Oil crud will plug small leaks, but once the synthetic removes the crud, you'll leak like crazy. So they say, anyway.

I switched to full synthetic 10w30 at 80 someodd thousand miles. If it didn't hurt me, chances are it won't hurt you, either.
