63473, I thought that my timing belt broke but.... Posted by pea_jay, Nov-21-03 11:18 AM
Well we pulled off the cover today because i thought that the belt broke, well it wasnt the belt. It was the tensioner pully. The bolt had backed off and broke and the pully just kind of fell down through there. This all happened when i was doing about 10-15 mph. What all damange do you think that it did?

I would say you have several to many bent valves. You will need to pull the head, and replace the valves, and at the same time, I would get a valve grind done on the seats. New valve oil stem seals woould be a good idea too, along with a good cleaning of the head and resurfacing the deck for flatness. All new timing belt components would be good too.

yea, I agree. this seems like one more good reason why we should leave our timing belt covers off, so we can see problems like bolts backing out, before they do something major

how often do you look at the bolts on your tensioner....:wary
leave the timing belt cover on imo, it'll keep rocks and shit out of there _________ 96 talon esi-t san clemente, ca

how often do you get a rock in the timing belt? :wary
I've heard of bolts backing out of the tensioner bracket/belt pulleys more than once. It's something I'd feel safer being able to check out every now and then. better than having to replace a perfectly good valve train

how hard is it to replace the valves? Like how many hours?

i think the best thing to do in this situation is to jump to horrible conclusions and buy an entire new car. ahhh wait that's everyone elses solution now what you really should do before emptying your bank is... replace the belt and tensioner, possibly water pump then do a leak down or compression test. doing 15 mph it's doubtful any valves are bent

how is 15 mph in first any different from 60 in 5th? The engine can be at 2000 RPM either way.

i agree put a new belt on compression check with it back intime see if its got bent valves if so take it out send to machine shop its about 180$ for a valve job with seals and valves are 8$ each(average)
you should be able to get out of it with about 500$ including all new gaskets water pump n stuff..

shouldnt the engine run like a turd or not run at all if you have bent valves?

when i had my timing belt redone, i replaced my water pump and some seals and it cost me like 720 bucks. sucked IMO. It was well worth it though, i had 100k miles on the car. Now if i could only find the electrial problem we will be ok!
