63319, Optima Red Top Battery Replacement... Posted by J, Nov-18-03 04:20 PM
Well, my battery is dead. Question is, is the Optima battery worth the ~$130 or would I B better off saving it 4 other "toys" and buying a normal ~$60 durawhatever.
I've got no amplifiers for my sound system (yet), I simply replaced all door speakers w/ JBL & replaced the head unit w/ JVC (~60Wx4). Only upgrade on the ignition is some Magnecore 8.5mm, no coilpack, etc. (yet). I'd imagine the only thing the extra 200 amps could do me right now is for ignition & starting, I dunno...
What do U guys think?

Go with an Optima Red Top, it's definately worth it, they have good warranty and they are long lasting strong batteries.

I think it more depends on how much you drive the car. I got tired of running through batteries because the car would sit during the week or during the winter when I would start her every ionce and a while. The Red Top holds a stored charge longer. It has nce cold cranking amps and it an excellent battery. But if you drive your car everyday, I don't know that you need the red top, there are plenty of good batteries out there that would fit your needs.

How much will a tow truck/ jump start cost next time your battery dies?
Get yourself an Optima.

If you park it, as with any other battery that you don't use for a while, put it on a battery tender. You can pick 'em up everywhere for like $10 or 15 and will guarantee the battery will be full next time you go to use it.
Oh, and go for the Optima. I have a yellow top in my truck, but it's been through a couple accidents (none mine) an alternator fire (mine) and 6 years and it still starts my truck even at -10F.

Yeah, go for the red top. I love mine. It took some custom fabbing to fit! (You have to trim the battery tray, no real big deal). Also the 3 year warranty rules. I just replaced mine with a new one as I don't have a battery tender and it sits a lot so it finally died after 2 years!:thumbsup

the red is just an automotive starter battery thats better than normal ones and the yellow top is a "deep-cycle" battery that'll hold the charge a lot longer and is for cars with hardcore sound systems or that stay in storage for a while

the blue tops are marine batteries. red and yellow are the only ones for cars. it's a good thing to mention that optima batteries are completely sealed so it's ok to toss one in your trunk without a vented battery box, because it won't release any poison gas that will kill you. thats another reason why they are so expensive.

Well HMmmmmmmmm, I think I'm gonna have 2 throw this 1 up 2 higher powers (my wife). I understand what U guys R saying... just that this is my daily driver, I live in sunny South FL, and have no enormous sound system. We'll C, right now I'm on the fence, 50/50.
Thanx 4 all the great input! - J

heh, i live in south fla too (miami) but i have a cheap sound system (not bad for the $80 amp) and a cheap costco battery. it works fine for me, most of the time. i can't justify spending the cash on a yellow top if you don't have some hardcore ICE

While I more than agree w/ U, I also tend 2 B very future minded & think it may do me good 2 get a bigger whatever (aka battery) now so I can fully enjoy it later when I can take full advantage of it.
Having gone 2 Dillard High Tech (just down the road) & B'ing a real (not fake) Floridian... the Swap Shop & Best Buy just Rn't 2 far away, hehehehe. Lots of things can change rather quickly sometimes, 4 the better I hope! :thumbsup

Don't forget that Green is for Nitrous setups, Orange top is best on big block Chrysler V8's, and Purple top for if you have underbody glow kits.
OH- and the pink top will give you 5-10hp... it overdrives the alternator for less parasitc loss.

How much for the green top? Oh, and can I put two batteries together? I wanna use the pink with the green so I can get an extra 10 hp. :)

I bought an Energizer battery from Pep Boys. It's not sealed like the Optima, but is has 1000 cranking amps. I think Optimas have about 750 cranking amps. The more amps the battery has the longer it will last. I think mtx cars require about 550 amps to start. The Energizer has double the life of the Optima. Enjoy what you've got. As long as the car starts when you turn the key - that's the most important thing.
btw, how heavy are Optimas? I didn't know if there was a significant difference between the two.

The Optima Yellow Top D31T is 1125 amps and the Yellow Tops range in weight from like 35-60 lbs depending on the one you get.

I didn't realize Yellow had that many amps. I think Red was 750. All I can say is... Go Yellow!:bowdown
