I'm getting ready for a rebuild. What do you think about Howell Automotive long rod kit. Has anyone used it. I used dyno 2000 and the .136 longer rod give about 6-10 ft lbs more of torque. What do you think. I'm turbo to.:wary

Have a another question. What is the highest you can bore it with out over heating problems. I see a lot of .20 over can we go .40 over.:shrug

longer rods increase the torque throughout the entire rpm band. Nice addition for turbo cars to get you into boost faster and a bit more out the hole, as well as give it a bit more oomph on the top end as well.

Longer rods increase the dwell time of the piston at TDC, allowing for the combustion to take place more fully while the piston is at the top of it's stroke. This gives a larger force being exerted on it's downstroke thereby increasing power.

I run the Howell 2.2 stroker block, and simply love it. I think you'll be just as pleased with the 2.0 Long rod block as well.

Thanks for the info. Thats good to hear. What power are you making out of that 2.2L. What boost and turbo are you running.:thumbsup

Boring the block has nothing to do with it overheating. Thats just a myth.

I'm working on transferring the car to a 3spd drag tranny at the moment. I haven't installed the 8 injector setup, and have been running 6psi on it up until now (I have all the parts, just haven't had the time to do it).

A good example of what kind of power this thing is making though..

Carlisle compact jam, my car was setup with
2.2 stroker
4spd automatic slushbox
chrome 18" enkei shurikens (50lbs per rim/tire)
full system in the trunk, amps, lotta weight
stage 2 turbo w/fmic
6psi on stock injectors with the 12:1 cartech

I was racing pikapp504, who had..
completely built 2.0
5spd manual
17" aluminum rims
small box with 2 10's, that's it as far as extra weight on his
11psi with a vortech and upgraded injectors

We were completely door to door the entire way down the road. As far as the factors determining it, he had absolutely everything in his favor, 2 seconds faster stock, less weight, less parasitic loss, yet my car, running less boost, with more weight, was still all over him like white on rice ;)

I think he's on this board somewhere too so he can verify it. The 2.2 makes some very very nice power, and it comes on ungodly fast. I imagine the long rod putting you right in between the 2.2 and the regular 2.0 as far as power is concerned.

Feel free to hit me up on aim, my s/n is glacius331, though for the next day or 2 I'll be in the garage as I finish up this 3spd swap

So where you find a 3sd trans at. I bet it sit you back a bit. Your car was running strong that strong at only 6psi thats great.

Everything on my car has came from Howell. Gary is probably the best person in the world to work with IMHO.

In fact, it was actually his idea for the 3spd tranny, as when the car is finished it's going to be making so much power (at least we hope so) that a 5spd really isn't going to be efficient for it.

The 3spd tranny is out of a neon DOHC automatic. I've got a pa racing NHRA spec flexplate, 3000 alabama hoss stall converter, pa racing reverse manual valve body, kolene clutch plates and steel bands, phantom grip LSD, all pins welded in, diff pin saver installed, 3.05 ring and pinion, steel planetaries compared to the cast planetaries, pretty much every mod available for the 3spd minus the pan extension to hold 2 extra quarts (just wasn't in stock at the time). This tranny should be shaving probably another second off of my 1/4, be strong enough to take anything I throw at it, and launch like a mofo with that stall converter and the phantom grip.

The 4spd auto in these cars suck, there's not much you can do to make them take alot of power, and I've seen people build them to the hills and back and it still break. The 3spd is taken directly from numerous drag neons, some of which are now sub 10's on this setup and proven quite effective.

I mainly post on asog, so check over there in the next week for some nice videos of when this swap is complete ;)

For now you can watch me vs. a gmc typhoon and a 13 second mustang :)
