I decided to make the PVC intake for my car and I placed the filter right behind the driver side opening in the bumper (usually covered by the little black plastic thing, but I took that off a long time ago) and since the filter is "exposed," I am worried that driving in even a light rain will end in a HUGE problem. Am I just being ridiculous or are my worries warranted??

I've driven in extremely hard storms and flooding and have never had a single problem. Hold the clutch and kill the engine if you're about to hit a huge puddle of rain.

But where is your filter at?? If i drive in the rain the water WILL hit the filter since it is exposed. Should I move the filter???

Dont worry about it. If you need warranty work just put your stock back on. Either that or spend a whole $50 and get a short-ram intake on ebay.

A small amoumt of water you pull in during a rain is not a problem it a problem when you submerge the filter and bring in a LOT of water. As in enough to fill the combustion chamber.

Which means you have to drive through a deep puddle, and submerge the filter. So plastic thing in or not you would be in trouble. just rain fall is not enough to cause any damage.

Is there a big difference between having the black piece on the bumber and taking it out. Do you get more power louder sound etc.
I m wondering If I should take mine out.

well, if you take out the black brake scoop peice, then you will have air hitting the filter when driving, allowing for a ramair type of effect. also, the filter will be able to suck colder air from outside the engine bay. the main thing u want is colder air, get the air to it however u want, but taking off the scoop things will definately help, just dont go drivin through big ass puddles at like 60

don't worry man...i have a cold air too and took the little black piece out too and have not sucked in a water yet...i have driven in all kinds of water...not too big though..just hold the clutch in and don't gas it in a big puddle...

So you guys are sayin that even if your filter is completely exposed to rain, and it gets all soaked by driving, but not submerged, its still ok for the engine? Any engine experts out there to verify this?? Does soaking the filter ruin it at all??

I don't know anything about mechanics, engineering, or physics so don't quote me, but remember:
1) K&N filters are coated with filter oil. Oil repels water.
2) Air follows the path of least resistance. If air had the choice of going thru water (and possibly sucking the water up with it) and going thru a tiny hole in the filter- it'd go thru the hole. Water's much heavier than air.
3) Most of us with CAI's have splashed thru a puddle or two, and I personally have never heard someone complain about their engine hydrolocking. In fact, I've heard of people using water *injection* in their engines.
