62860, Enging Rebuild Questions (kinda long) Posted by Collente, Nov-10-03 03:52 PM
Im rebuilding my engine. I have another car, so time really isnt an issue. I want this to be 100% perfect. I've started taking everything off the engine, I will be lifting it out with the tranny attached.
Here is what I have: -Forged JE Pistons and Piston Rings 8:81 compression -Forged Eagle Rods -Clevite 77 Main bearings -Clevite 77 Rod bearings -Tripple core head gasket Getting: -Water Pump -Oil Pump -Timing belt parts (pully, idler, ect) -Timing belt -PS Belt
I will be taking the block to a shop to have them install the pistons/rods and bearings, should I have them do anything else??? I will be doing the rest. Is there anything else that I should get for the block? What Gaskets and seals are good to change?
Anything else that you would reccomend? Suggestions advice?
TIA! BTW, I do have access to air tools. I also have a chiltons.

Has the shop agreed to install all that already? When I did mine, they wouldn't touch any parts I bought. (They kinda sucked) As far as what you say they're going to do, there's really not much else to the bottom end. If they install the rotating assy, make sure they use the right sealant for the bedplate and don't forget that critical o-ring in there! (Trust me...)
Sounds like you're off to a good start to me. :thumbsup

The company said they would install my pistons and things.
Here is the delema I'm faced with. I dont know exactly what else I should have OR what I need to make sure I tell them. Does that make sense? Like you said there is special sealent for the bedplate and the O'ring. What is the O'ring called? And I would assume that the sealent is in the chiltons. Anything else that anyone can think of?
I'm going to contact the company again and let them know what I'm doing and if they have any feedback on what I need.

Anyone with some insight or hell, just somethings that you would have liked to know about pulling the engine? Nick 97RS

If your pissing away money (applies to all HiPo motors, don't worry) you might as well have it bored with a deckplate and make sure that the dumbasses have new freeze plugs put in it.(Sucks when they forget) Also have everything you get balanced. That's about an extra 100 bux though. They'll need a bearing, piston, rod, crank, and flywheel to do this properly, so be sure to have all the parts ready and upfront or they will find excuses later for being slow. I've delt with alot of machine shops, can you tell?:rolleyes

Erik, Thats some great feedback. I'll make sure I do all of that. I had no idea about a freeze plug. I'm still learning a lot. I have been reading the chiltons and post after post... Its things like that, that have me nervous as hell. I dont want to have the engine back together and have a million problems.
Im just going to feel like a jack ass and ask then, I hope you guys dont mind. What are Freeze plugs? Do the machine shops normally have them? Something I should pick up. I think I might know what they are but not sure.

The parts that I am going to mention aren't really needed for the engine build but are definitely needed for the engine pull/reassembly. They are not very expensive and should be replaced while you have easy access.
2 New Camshaft Seals ($3 a piece) 4 Spark Plug Well Gaskets ($7 a piece) Valve Cover Gasket ($25) Oil Pan Gasket Alternator Belt (if you are going to replace the PS belt might as well do this one) Make sure the Water Pump comes with the new gasket
Freeze Plugs (someone correct me if I am wrong) are the silver plugs on the motor that allow access to either the oil or antifreeze galleys in the block. I believe they are used to access the galleys in the event of a blockage.
You can see two of them on the front of my motor in the picture below:

Hope this helps, Kurt

Yeah, grab the upper gasket set from the dealership. I paid like 80 bucks for it from bob kise at forum dodge. It comes with everything you need, MLS headgasket, intake gaskets, VC gaskets, exaust mani gasket, thermostat housing gasket, cam posistion sensor gasket. You may as well pickup some blue loctite and red anerobic sealant as specified in the 420a overhaul manual. Also your probably going to need 3 quarts of mtx fluid if your maunal, and the mopar gasket sealer. Spray that sealant on all the gaskets before you install them, I believe the MLS headgasket requires that spray. thats all I can think of right now...

It's very doubtful that a local machine shop is going to have a 420A deckplate for engine boring (ideally you should use a trans plate too, not I don't think anybody makes one).
Have the rotating assembly balanced for sure. A good cleaning, and any competant machinist should be able to blueprint an engine. Get the deck checked while you are at it, as well as the head surface, for any warpage.
