in my quest to make my car pass smog I checked my ignition system out again. My wires checked out well and I checked the secondary coil resistance and got like a 11.5k so that's in spec. But for the primary I got a 1.0-0.9 OHM and with another multi meter a 0.6-0.7 ohm. The spec is suppose to be 0.51-0.61 ohms so I'm thinking MAYBE my coil is bad or on its way out.

Just wonder how long everyone elses coils have lasted on their 2gnts. My car is on the stock coil (at least I think it is, 2nd owner :P) and I got like 100k miles on it. I've already replaced those messed up stock wires.

The car does run pretty smooth, sometimes I get some stuttering when its cold, well pretty much all the time it developed a while ago though so I'm used to it. Would that .1 ohm varience be enough to not a get a good spark at 2k rpm? (thats what they smog test it at)

it could just be my multimeter sux at measuring small resistances, but I did try two a fluke meter and some made in china brand one.

yikes I guess it would be a good idea to replace mine just for the hell of it. I'm really eyeing that Screamin Demon coil pack, if that extra spark will help me pass smog I'm all for it.

NE1 know where I can acquire a 97+ wiring harness for one? Pity they don't make em with the round pins :(

no but seriously the output's supposed to be more performance oriented whereas the msd is like a high quality stock-spec replacement.

Check Howell's site under Neon, I thought they listed it for both, jut not under the 2GNT section. Otherwise give Bob Kise a call or check with a local dealership, they should sell sensor/part specific conectors to splice in.

nah only the MSD is made for both models.. haha actually for awhile the MSD only came in the 95-96 version

i guess i'll try callin bob kise sometime. it's a piece of plastic and wires. how much could it possibly cost?

haha so you know how they have it listed for neons but it's kinda made for us? does that mean the neon boys get stuck with the label on backwards like how we get stuck with the backwards label on the MSD? :P

Yeah, I have one. My plugs are gapped at .065 and it runs great. You don't HAVE to gap them right away. I waited to gap them until I changed the plugs and wires.

why do you have to gap it wider? what if you're boosted? would there be a general amount of more gap to have, or does it depend? this is all very foreign to me

I still have my stock coils....and i'm at 128k miles =) Go mopar!

You can buy the pre-97 to post 97 coil connector adapters for less than 15 bux at your local dealer.

With more volts it produces a higher quality spark so you can gap it wider. With the hotter spark you get more complete combustion.

Well like they mentioned above. The screaming demon coil does actually give out a higher output spark.

The MSD just barely does, if anything at all, but it is cheaper then the oem one.

haha ok so satan said the harness will be about $1200

apparrantly they don't sell the coil pack harness separately - they only sell the ENTIRE engine wire harness (like everything connected to ECU).

so yea. that sucks.
